Thüngersheim: Wine Trails, Art and Half-Timbered Houses

The Bocksbeutel Trail runs from Veitshöchheim to Retzbach through the Thüngersheim district and is an alternative to the Main Hiking Trail. The Wine Trail, in turn, connects the Bocksbeutel Trail with the Orchid Trail. The routes therefore differ in their stated roles: the Bocksbeutel Trail offers an alternative to the Main Hiking Trail, while the Wine Trail connects two named routes.

Information boards along the Wine Trail provide an overview of grape varieties and winegrowing. This makes the route especially interesting if you want to learn more about winegrowing along the way, rather than simply follow the trail. Art, wine and local history

At the terroir f site on Thüngersheim’s Johannisberg stands a large bronze sculpture of Ariadne from Greek mythology. The site’s motto is “Wine and mythology – wine is divine!” Here, a mythological motif and the interpretation of wine come together in one place.

At Scharlachberg, the Vinomax rises prominently above the shell limestone beds of the Lower Muschelkalk. It connects with the themes of wine, research and education. The route to the Vinomax follows Weinbergsweg and Scharlachsgrund; check the signs on site. Unlike the mythological connection at Johannisberg, research and education are at the heart of the wine theme here.

The townscape offers a different focus, too. The winding lanes of the old town are home to several well-preserved or fully restored half-timbered houses. Just beyond the edge of Thüngersheim, a historic wine press stands right beside the vineyards. The half-timbered houses in the old town and the wine press by the vineyards offer two distinct insights into the town’s built heritage and winegrowing.

Landscape and history

The area between Thüngersheim and Güntersleben was designated a nature reserve in 1940. This historic designation adds another landscape dimension to the themes of winegrowing and the townscape.
