Several visible details, preserved for public viewing, are part of Oberzell Abbey’s historic furnishings: 18th-century wall paintings, discovered and uncovered during renovation, original stucco from the Echter period, and a Renaissance portal. There are also stone slabs from the abbey courtyard in the forecourt of the rooms, as well as an old kitchen area with a chimney flue and evidence of a clay bread oven. The different building features and traces offer distinct points of interest on the tour—from wall decoration and architecture to the former use of the rooms.

Local History, Sukkah and Well Chamber

An original, preserved sukkah is located at Judenhof 1a and belongs to the market town of Zell am Main. The sukkah in Unterzell documents almost 100 years of the Rosenbaum family’s life and work during the difficult period of Jewish emancipation. Alongside the abbey rooms, it offers a look at a place whose story is that of a family and its time.

Another glimpse into local history can be found at the water museum in the “Rose” inn. It is housed in an excavated old well chamber and presents both the history of the market town and the history of Zell’s springs. The historic well chamber thus connects two topics that belong together in the museum: the development of the town and its springs.

Walks and Circular Hiking Trails

There are three signposted walks in the old town, where you can explore Zell’s culture on foot. Check the local signs before setting out. Above Zell am Main, two circular hiking trails of different lengths also run through the water protection area: the water education trail and the nature trail. Culture and Events Throughout the Year

The Zell Cultural Mile takes place every two years in the old town along Hauptstraße. Artists can exhibit some of their works in private premises. The Kulturkeller adds to the cultural offering as a regular event venue: the Zell am Main Cultural Working Group organises events there at least once a month, including concerts, cabaret performances and exhibitions. The Laurentius Festival is the village festival organised by the clubs and associations. It is celebrated every two years on the last weekend in June in the courtyard of the town hall.
