Röttingen brings together winegrowing, historic buildings and distinctive routes to create a varied holiday destination. In summer, the castle courtyard and the castle’s tithe barn at Brattenstein Castle provide the setting for the open-air theatre of the Frankenfestspiele. Those interested in wine culture will also find walking routes, a wine museum and a festival celebrating the wines of the Röttinger Feuerstein vineyard. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can decide whether theatre, town history, wine or outdoor activities should take centre stage on your trip.

Town Wall, Castle and Open-Air Theatre

Seven of the 14 original towers of Röttingen’s town wall have been preserved. Some of them are partly inhabited. The wall and towers once served as defences and are now among the town’s sights. The difference between the original number of towers and those still standing offers a tangible point of reference for the town’s history, while the partly inhabited towers also show that the buildings are not all in the same condition.

Another historic landmark is Brattenstein Castle, first mentioned in 1230 in connection with the Lords of Hohenlohe. Since 1984, its courtyard and tithe barn have provided the setting each summer for the open-air theatre of the Frankenfestspiele Röttingen. At the castle, you can therefore encounter both a place first recorded in writing long ago and a summer theatre venue. If you would like to plan your trip around a theatre performance, you can take this cultural highlight into account when arranging your holiday.

Experience Wine and Learn About Winegrowing

Röttingen celebrates its wine festival every Whitsun. In the winegrowers’ barns and courtyards, you can sample wines from the Röttinger Feuerstein vineyard, ranging from Silvaner to Tauberschwarz. The festival brings together different grape varieties and the winegrowers’ courtyards and barns. If regional wines and good food are an important part of your stay, it is a special event to keep in mind when planning your trip.

Routes through the wine country are also available outside the wine festival. A wine walk leads from the historic old town through orchards and vineyards. Along the wine trail, information boards offer insights into the vineyards, grape varieties and terroir, as well as aspects of prehistory and history. You can alternate between taking in the landscape and learning about winegrowing and the area’s past. The wine museum complements this theme: it aims to document the history of winegrowing in Röttingen and the Tauber Valley. On display are historic tools from different periods and a former winegrower’s traditional costume.

Gardens, Sundials and Routes

The Paracelsus Garden offers a different way to explore. Around 70 different culinary and medicinal herbs grow there, some cultivated and others growing wild. Sculptures by the artist Herbert Mehler create a contrast with the plants. Nature and art sit side by side in the garden, so a visit need not focus solely on wine or town history.

The Sundial Trail is a circular route about 2 kilometres long, featuring 22 different sundials within and around the town wall. Those interested in truffles can learn about the secrets of truffle cultivation on a guided visit to the truffle plantation.

The Gaubahn Cycle Route also passes through Röttingen. For most of its length, it follows the former railway line that once connected the Tauber Valley with the Main Valley. For a trip that includes cycling, this historic route is another point of interest. Röttingen is in the Romantic Tauber Valley and on the Romantic Road; both descriptions place the town within a wider travel context.
