Landscape between water and gneiss

At Hochfels in the district of Schwandorf, the gneiss was included in Bavaria’s list of the 100 most beautiful geotopes. The Wald- und Heidelandschaft nature reserve provides a valuable refuge for species that cannot survive in areas with denser vegetation and more nutrient-rich soils. Geological features and the protection of a habitat with particular site conditions thus coexist in the region.

Cycling routes and nature by the water

The Weiher cycle route is around 9 kilometres long and signposted throughout in both directions. It connects Schwandorf with Lake Murner and runs through the Charlottenhofer Weiher nature reserve. The Murner-See-Weg offers a different type of route: it is a circular trail around Lake Murner. Cultural destinations and special experiences

The Upper Palatinate Open-Air Museum is located in Nabburg in the district of Schwandorf. Through around 50 reconstructed buildings, it presents how people in the Upper Palatinate lived and worked over the past 300 years. In the town of Schwandorf, the Felsenkeller labyrinth comprises more than 130 cellars. A connected section with around 60 rooms has been restored and is open to the public on guided tours. At the EIXI adventure playground by Lake Eixendorf near Neunburg vorm Wald, there are swings, spring riders, a slide, a rocking boat and several climbing elements. The range of activities extends from nature observation and cycling routes to guided tours and play equipment.
