Lignite and local history
The Wackersdorf Local and Industrial Museum tells the story of the town, its society and its industry over time. Right next to the museum is Geotope 99, “Wackersdorf Lignite.” It was formed in the former “Westfeld” mining area; a coal seam is still visible there today, south of the main settlement of Wackersdorf. The museum and geotope thus offer two different ways to explore local history: the development of society and industry on the one hand, and the visible geological traces of lignite mining on the other.
The museum nature trail is 4.8 kilometres long—just under five kilometres—and passes through a former mining area that has since been recultivated. Along the way, it passes Geotope 99 and the Tertiary Forest. It also links the Local and Industrial Museum in Wackersdorf with the Lignite and Local History Museum in Steinberg am See. The trail can therefore be seen as a themed route connecting mining history, a recultivated landscape and the two museums.
The Upper Palatinate Fairy-Tale Garden offers a different cultural focus. Stories come to life there on information boards, in illustrations and through wooden sculptures. The different ways of presenting them make the garden another destination for anyone interested in stories as well as industrial and local history.
Things to do at Lake Murner and in Wackersdorf
The Wasser-Fisch-Natur Adventure Park is a family highlight at Lake Murner. Its play area is open from April to October; check the latest information about these seasonal opening times before your visit. The paths and sanitary facilities are accessible, but not wheelchair-accessible. There are designated parking spaces for people with disabilities in front of the adventure park. It is also advisable to check the latest parking arrangements before setting out.
Wackersdorf has two Kneipp facilities, each with different features. The natural Kneipp facility at Lake Murner is right on the nature trail. The second facility is below the Panoramabad swimming pool and has an herb garden. The Kneipp facility below the Panoramabad has seasonal opening hours: it is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April 29 to October 31. Check the hours before your visit if you are planning to go during this period.
World and European Championships are held at ProKart Raceland, and visitors can also drive on the track themselves. Check in advance for specific event dates. The indoor track is almost 500 metres long, while the outdoor track is around 1.2 kilometres long. The two tracks therefore differ considerably in length—a useful point of comparison if you are deciding between the indoor and outdoor options.
