Nittenau: Hiking on the Jugenberg and local history

At 612 metres, the Jugenberg is considered Nittenau’s local mountain. Its slopes feature woodland paths and rock formations, making the mountain a popular destination for hikers. Alongside these trails, the Storchenturm and town museum offer a glimpse into the town’s history. Your trip can therefore include both active outings and historical sights.

Hiking trails for different ability levels
There are more than 100 km of designated hiking trails in the municipality of Nittenau. The Jugenberg circular trail is 12.4 km long, takes 4 hours and has 404 metres of elevation gain; it is rated moderate. The Ritter- und Geisterpfad (Knights and Ghosts Trail) is also rated moderate: this 12.1 km circular trail has 305 metres of elevation gain and starts at the Stefling car park.
For a shorter walk, the circular trail In der Regenaue, at 5.6 km and an approximate duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes, is a different option; it starts at Kirchplatz. The Der Bunte Weg nature trail is part of the In der Regenaue themed trail, which runs close to the town. Another option is the Zuweg 25 A, which covers 10.1 km from Nittenau via Sollbach to the Goldsteig. It is rated easy and has 148 metres of elevation gain. The two moderate circular trails are similar in length but differ in elevation gain. The In der Regenaue circular trail takes considerably less time than the four-hour Jugenberg circular trail; comparing the walking times makes it easier to plan your schedule.
Local history and places brought to life
The Storchenturm stands in Nittenau’s market square and was probably built in the 14th century. The town museum displays a copy of the document recording Nittenau’s first mention in 1007. A wooden model reconstructs numerous houses based on the layout shown on an 1832 cadastral map. The document and the model offer different ways to explore local history: one through the town’s early mention, the other through a depiction of its houses based on a historical plan.
Nittenau’s historic castles and palaces include Burg Hof am Regen, Burg Stockenfels and Schloss Stefling. During the “Geisterwanderung” (Ghost Walk) pageant, spectators walk through the Regen Valley to three performance sites. You can encounter local history through exhibits and historic buildings, as well as in a performance whose route through the valley leads to several scenes.
