In the district of Roth, nature experiences, cycling routes and cultural discoveries can be found in various locations. The 210-hectare Rothsee lies between Roth, Hilpoltstein and Allersberg; the district also offers opportunities to relax on and by the water. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: water and nature, longer cycling tours, or archaeological discoveries? You can then compare the locations and routes to suit your planned holiday days.

Rothsee and outdoor trails

A range of leisure activities are available at Rothsee. Familygolf has 18 artificial-turf mini-golf holes; there are no age restrictions. The sailing school at Rothsee offers sailing instruction and sailboat rentals. Its listed address is in Hilpoltstein.

The Rothsee Environmental Education Centre offers a variety of activities: year-round guided tours are available for school classes, kindergarten groups, people with disabilities and visitor groups, and are tailored to their ages and abilities. During school holidays and at weekends, there is an open programme for children and families; they can also explore the centre independently. For specific guided tours and dates, it is best to check the current programme.

The “An der Kleinen Roth” nature trail follows the stream of the same name. It rises east of Allersberg and gives Rothsee its name. The 2.3-kilometre trail has seven information stations. Another route is the KammerSTEINPILZpfad in Kammerstein: four kilometres long, it passes ten mushroom nests with quiz questions and a playground. The two trail lengths provide a clear basis for choosing between them.

Cycling tours of varying lengths are available in the district and the wider region. The “RH hoch 2” circular cycling route follows the district boundaries and loops around the entire district of Roth for more than 200 kilometres. By contrast, the approximately 51-kilometre Gredl cycle path is a circular route along the former railway line between Hilpoltstein and Greding; it passes through varied countryside. There are also numerous walking and cycling routes around Brombachsee.

Discover archaeology and history

The Fundreich Thalmässing is located nearby. It comprises the Archaeological Museum on the market square, the Living History Village of Landersdorf and the Archaeological Hiking Trail. Fundreich showcases significant finds and archaeological sites from past historical periods. In Landersdorf, three farmsteads illustrate how people lived in the Neolithic period, in Celtic times and in the Early Middle Ages. The hiking trail is divided into three circular routes that can be combined.

In Roth, the collection at Ratibor Castle Museum focuses on the history of the castle and the town. Regular blacksmithing demonstrations at the former Schäff Ironworks near Eckersmühlen offer a different kind of historical experience. Museum visits, archaeological insights and traditional craftsmanship are therefore distinct cultural options.

Nature and regional experiences

The calcareous tufa terraces in Kaising form a sensitive ecosystem and should not be walked on. Keep this restriction in mind when including natural attractions in your trip. Further afield, the Großer Brombachsee adds to the range of things to do: it covers 870 hectares. From spring to autumn, the “MS Brombachsee” excursion boat operates there; it is the largest trimaran on an inland body of water in Europe. Check the current operating days before travelling.

Seasonal events may also play a part in planning your trip. The DATEV Challenge Roth is a recurring summer-season triathlon event in the district of Roth; you should check the relevant event dates and participation details separately. The Gredl-Express 636 runs from Hilpoltstein via Thalmässing and Greding to Kinding and back. Along the way, it passes sights in the district, including half-timbered villages, Baroque and Rococo buildings, and museums with archaeological finds. As the route may change seasonally, it is best to check the current timetable.

Listed restaurants in the district of Roth contribute to Franconian cuisine: under the “original regional” seal, they serve dishes made with local products. Participating establishments and listings may change.
