Abenberg Castle houses the Castle Museum and the Bobbin Lace Museum. The Castle Museum presents an interactive exhibition on 1,000 years of castle history. The Bobbin Lace Museum focuses on lacework from Abenberg and elsewhere in Europe, including pieces made of gold and silver. The collection thus spans a long-standing local craft tradition and work from various parts of Europe. Bobbin lace has shaped Abenberg’s history for 400 years.
The Luginsland observation tower is also part of Abenberg Castle. It offers sweeping views across the countryside. Hiking Trails with Different Highlights
The “Experience Abenberg’s Water” hiking trail begins in the town centre. It crosses fields, passes several ponds and goes through the forest. It then loops back to Klosterweiher, its starting point. This sequence makes the transition from town to countryside a defining part of the route.

Abenberg on the Castle Road
Abenberg is on the Castle Road. This 840-kilometre themed route runs between Heidelberg/Schwetzingen and Bayreuth, connecting more than 40 places of interest. Abenberg is therefore part of a wider travel itinerary. When planning, you can weigh the local highlights—the castle, Bobbin Lace Museum and hiking trails—against the rest of the route, without limiting your visit to a single attraction.
Getting There and the Wider Roth Region
Bus route 605 is useful for planning your journey: it runs under the name Roth–Abenberg–Spalt and departs from Roth station. It is also called the Brombachsee Express. Before travelling, check the current timetable with the transport operator, as bus services can change.
The wider Roth travel region also includes Rothsee, a 210-hectare lake between Roth, Hilpoltstein and Allersberg. The Gredl Express 636 is also part of this broader regional area: it runs from Hilpoltstein via Thalmässing and Greding to Kinding and back, passing numerous attractions in the Roth district along the way.
