Heideck between Town History and Nature
Accommodation in Heideck
Heideck combines traces of its town history with trails, nature topics and seasonal activities. A town walk offers a different perspective from a cycling or hiking tour; the outdoor pool and local heritage festival are tied to the seasons. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
History in the Town Centre and at Schloßberg
The parish church of St. John the Baptist in Heideck is home to a Late Gothic Madonna from the circle of Hans Leinberger, possibly even created by him. It dates from the beginning of the 16th century, when Heideck belonged to Bavaria-Landshut. Visitors can also encounter traces of the town’s eventful history in many places on a town walk. Eva Schultheiß leads visitors through various streets to notable buildings and explains their origins and key details.
Outside the town, about 3 km southwest of Heideck, the plateaus of the outer and main castles, as well as two mighty neck ditches, remain at the Schloßberg castle site. The Altenheideck castle site lies about 4.5 km west of the town. In 2007, it was cleared of vegetation, surveyed and made accessible by an observation platform.
Cycling and Hiking Trails with Different Themes
The fully paved Gredl cycling and hiking trail passes through Heideck’s Seiboldsmühle district. It is suitable for hiking, cycling and skating; routes of varying levels of difficulty are also available. When choosing a tour, you can take into account both your preferred way of getting around and the level of difficulty that suits you.
The Heideck Castles Trail links a series of historic places: from Heideck, it leads via Liebenstadt to the Altenheideck castle site, back to Liebenstadt, and on to the Schloßberg castle site and Rudletzholz, before returning to Heideck. The Laibstadt History Trail explores the area around 950-year-old Laibstadt, which is politically part of the town of Heideck. Check local conditions before setting out on these trails.
Nature, Activity and Water
The Höfener Hohlweg nature trail passes through geologically diverse zones and three different habitats. Four information boards highlight important native animal and plant species; typical indicator plants are marked with signs and QR codes. Nature and landscape are the focus of this trail, while the Castles Trail is defined by its stops at towns and castle sites.
The low ropes course on the Schloßberg family adventure trail has 23 elements arranged in a circular course. It offers both playful competition and cooperative group activities. The municipal Heideck outdoor pool is a seasonal summer attraction: it has more than 1,000 m² of water surface, heated water, a 16-metre-wide wave slide in the non-swimmers’ pool and a 5-metre diving tower by the diving pool. Check current local conditions before visiting, and check the seasonal rules for the outdoor pool.
Local Heritage Festival and Travel Period
The Heideck local heritage festival, known throughout the wider region, takes place on the third weekend in July, when Heideck and the surrounding area come alive. The exact date varies from year to year. Check the municipality’s current event listing before your trip. For planning purposes, trails and town history are year-round attractions, while visits to the outdoor pool and the local heritage festival are limited to specific times.
In the wider Roth destination
In the wider Roth destination, the 210-hectare Rothsee lies between Roth, Hilpoltstein and Allersberg. The An der Kleinen Roth nature trail follows the stream of the same name, which rises east of Allersberg and gives Rothsee its name. The trail is 2.3 kilometres long and has seven information stations. In Kammerstein, the four-kilometre KammerSTEINPILZpfad runs past ten mushroom nests with quiz questions and a playground.
The Rothsee environmental education centre offers guided tours year-round, tailored to different ages and abilities, for school classes, kindergarten groups, people with disabilities and visitor groups. During school holidays and at weekends, there is an open programme for children and families; they can also explore the centre independently. Contact the operator for current dates. A much longer cycling route is the RH hoch 2 tour: it follows the district boundaries and loops around the entire district of Roth for more than 200 kilometres.
