Greding combines historic traces with outdoor activities: the city wall and basilica shape a stay in the old town, alongside archaeological insights, hiking trails and cycling tours. The almost completely preserved city wall, with its 21 towers, makes Greding’s old town a striking setting for a walk through the town’s history.

Old Town and Archaeology

The Archaeology Museum Greding displays finds from archaeological excavations in Großhöbing and the town of Greding. A tour lasting one to one and a half hours through the early medieval section offers an introduction to the world of the Baiuvarii, who settled in the Schwarzach Valley nearly 1,500 years ago. The museum visit thus connects specific find sites with a glimpse into the valley’s early medieval settlement.

Today’s Basilica of St. Martin was built in the mid-12th century. Its late Gothic high altar dates from around 1480 and depicts Christ on the cross. The basilica thus reveals two distinct periods in its architectural history. The former prince-bishop’s hunting lodge on Greding’s market square is also part of the town’s history: it was built under Prince-Bishop Johann Euchar Schenk von Castell (1685–1697) by court architect Jakob Engel.

Hiking, Cycling and a Festival in July

Local hiking trails around Greding pass natural attractions and cultural sights. The Adolf-Hackner-Weg is a particularly good way to discover some of the most scenic sections of Greding’s hiking trails. The Schwarzachtal Panorama Trail, a loop trail, connects with the long-distance Altmühltal Panorama Trail. This offers several different options for hikers: trails around Greding, particularly scenic sections and a connection to a long-distance trail.

Greding is also a starting point for varied cycling tours. For a break in town, visit the Heinrich-Herold-Anlage by the Eichstätter Gate: the park along the city wall is open to everyone at all times and includes a modern children’s playground and a water play area.

The Greding Volksfest is held every year on the fourth weekend in July. Its regular program includes brass band music and performances by show bands, as well as an amusement park for children and adults. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates for the relevant year.
