The 2.4-kilometre sculpture trail leads from the “Am Bruckespan” leisure park towards Roth and on to Oberheckenhofen. Along the level footpath and cycle path are 15 works of art made from Jura limestone, steel and wood. These materials give the trail a distinctly varied artistic character, while the stated distance provides a practical guide for planning your day. If you would like to combine a walk with art, this offers a different kind of outdoor experience from an educational trail.

The Planet Trail is 7.5 kilometres long and illustrates the proportions of our solar system. The two trails therefore differ in their stated lengths: the sculpture trail is 2.4 kilometres, while the Planet Trail is 7.5 kilometres. When planning, you can consider whether the shorter art trail or the longer route focusing on the solar system appeals to you more.

Leisure park and activities

The public “Am Bruckespan” leisure park is located right on the Franconian Rezat. It has a pavilion, swings, a beach volleyball court, a double cable ride and a tunnel slide. There is also a basketball court, climbing wall, play lawn, sandbox, baby slide and boules court. The range of facilities includes everything from play equipment and activities to a place to play boules. If you are travelling with children, you can include different options in your stay depending on their interests, without structuring the day around just one activity. In winter, the park has a natural ice-skating area.

Jewish history and local landmarks

A restored synagogue, a large Jewish cemetery and a Tahara house, where the dead were washed, form a fully preserved ensemble in Georgensgmünd. Together, they document the former Jewish religious life of the rural area. This gives local history a distinct cultural focus, setting it apart from the trails and leisure activities.

The former synagogue displays religious books, phylacteries (tefillin), prayer shawls (tallit katan) and other objects found in the geniza of Georgensgmünd. The objects point to different aspects of religious life, while the geniza finds connect them to Georgensgmünd’s history. In choosing what interests you, this means that, alongside activity and nature, the town also offers a distinctive way to explore Jewish history.

Another historic landmark is the waterwheel, which is still in operation. It recalls Friedrichsgmünd’s industrial past. The Waterwheel Festival takes place every year in early summer and is organised by local associations, with numerous attractions. Near the town hall, there is also a gilded sun, 1.4 metres in diameter, mounted on a steel base. The octagonal tower of the Protestant Church of St George is covered with green-glazed tiles and can be seen from far away as a landmark of the town.

The central starting point for the hiking trails is the car park by the waterwheel, where there are plenty of parking spaces. Information boards about the hiking trails are also located by the waterwheel on the Rezat. If you would like to explore Georgensgmünd on foot, you can use this as a starting point for finding your way around. The information there complements the specific options offered by the sculpture trail and Planet Trail, without treating the two as the same kind of route.

For a stay focused on art and activity, the sculpture trail is a useful point of reference; if you are interested in the solar system, you could consider the longer Planet Trail. The leisure park, local history and waterwheel add further themes to these options.
