Dürrwangen combines architectural history with a distinctive landscape theme: the Maria Immaculata parish church and historic buildings offer insights into the town’s history, while the Sulzach River and the Sulzach Cycle Route open up a different perspective. When planning your trip, consider whether you would prefer to focus on church and architectural history or spend more time cycling.

Maria Immaculata and its different historical layers

Different eras meet in the Maria Immaculata parish church. The choir is the oldest part of the church and has a Gothic net vault dating from the late Middle Ages. The term describes the vault’s net-like pattern. Another historical layer is the Stations of the Cross from the early 20th century: 14 carved panels depict the Passion of Jesus Christ. The choir altar and its carved figures are also considered particularly worth seeing.

The history of the church building can be considered separately: the former Marienkirche became the Maria Immaculata parish church in 1884. The architectural form, carved works of art and its development into a parish church thus offer different perspectives on the local history of the church.

Town Hall, castle and Old Gymnasium

Buildings beyond the church also tell stories of different uses and periods of construction. Dürrwangen Town Hall was built in the 18th century as the town’s first schoolhouse. Dürrwangen Castle adds another architectural feature: after numerous fires, its main building took on its present Baroque form in the 18th century.

After renovation, the former TSV gymnasium was given the name “Old Gymnasium.” The Alte Turnhalle cultural experience aims to offer free cultural events to anyone interested in culture. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check specific dates in advance. This gives you a choice of different points of interest: sacred architectural history, a former schoolhouse, castle architecture and a cultural venue.

The Sulzach, a Kneipp facility and a cycle route

The Sulzach flows largely undisturbed through the landscape beside the parish church. Here, the church building and the river are two tangible local points of interest. At Schießweiher, Otto Baumgärtner donated the Kneipp facility out of his affection for the people of his home community of Dürrwangen. It was built and officially opened in 1998. If you would like to include the facility in your plans, check in advance that it is currently available for use.

The Sulzach Cycle Route runs through Sulzachpark, past Walkmühle and on to Dürrwangen. Its described route adds cycling to the local themes of architecture and churches. When choosing a holiday apartment in Dürrwangen, weigh your travel interests against each other: would you like to devote most of your time to the history of the buildings, or plan to spend more time cycling? This way, your search can reflect the mix of themes you are looking for.
