Hiking trails between vineyards and the valley

In Tauberzell, the “Hasennestle” circular hiking trail starts at St. Vitus Church. At around 4.8 kilometres long, it leads through vineyards and offers views of Tauberzell and the valley from Holdermühle to Tauberscheckenbach. For your planning, it is important to know that the trail is not wheelchair accessible, as the two levels of the vineyard are connected only by an unpaved path. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider whether this route suits the kind of holiday you want.

The Lachenweg offers a different landscape. It climbs along an old sunken lane and passes former and still-cultivated vineyards. It also crosses the Rothenburg Landhege, a historic earthwork that is still visible today. Anyone interested in viticulture and landscape history will find both along the same trail, without the two subjects being treated as one and the same.

A hike from Tauberscheckenbach to Gickelhausen also passes through the scenic Gickelhausen Valley. In Großharbach, the “Hegereiterweg” cycling and hiking trail runs right through the village.

Cycling and enjoying the natural surroundings

Near Tauberscheckenbach, cyclists cross the Tauber and join the well-known “Romantic Tauber Valley” cycle route. This cycling route complements the hiking trails with another way to experience the landscape. For families planning outings together, the interests of those travelling with them may play a part in choosing a suitable base: some may prefer hiking trails, while others would rather go cycling.

In Tauberzell, the “Tauberzell Wild Fruit Orchard” features 20 wild fruit and fruit trees in 16 different varieties. Explanatory texts provide information about the plants. This makes the site interesting for anyone who would like to learn more about native trees and shrubs as well as enjoy the route itself. The vineyards, valley views and fruit trees each add their own distinctive touches to the landscape.

Village life and historic buildings

The church dedicated to Saint Nicholas stands in the centre of Adelshofen. A local custom known as “Kirchweihausgraben” is part of village tradition: the village youth keep the custom alive and humorously portray local events in a procession through the village. Such traditions offer a glimpse of local character, distinct from the landscape experiences found along the hiking trails.

Großharbach is home to a historic watchtower dating from 1606, which forms part of the Rothenburg Landhege. Neustett’s best-known building is a round tower in the centre of the village, formerly used as a wind-powered oil mill. In Gickelhausen, an altar table from a former chapel stands in the cemetery; it is preserved as a historic monument and held in high regard by local residents. Also in Gickelhausen, the old Brechhaus south of the village pond has been preserved. The municipality restored it in the 1970s. On the Tauber, the Hautschenmühle mill in the municipality of Adelshofen features Baroque half-timbered gables.

Discover viticulture and other villages

Tauberzell retains the character of a Franconian Häcker village, where viticulture has a tradition stretching back more than 800 years. Together with the “Romantic Road,” the vineyards and the circular hiking trail, this gives the area a distinct appeal for travellers interested in viticulture and trails through the landscape.

For further insights into the municipality’s villages, you can also discover Tauberzell and Haardt. This lets you match your search for a suitable holiday apartment to your interests, whether that means hiking, a cycling trip, viticulture or historic buildings.
