The origins of the village church of St. Oswald and Aegidius are thought to date back to the 9th century, when a private church dedicated to St. Oswald was built in the royal hunting grounds of Ellwanger Forst. The hunting grounds and dedication provide a concrete historical setting for the church’s early history.
The monastery church of St. Peter and Paul stands above the Rothach and is surrounded by a cemetery. Its description has a different emphasis from that of the village church: here, the setting and surroundings take centre stage, while the village church is associated with its presumed 9th-century origins.
