Lehrberg combines church history with outdoor activities in a hilly, wooded setting. The ruins of St. Jobst Chapel and St. Margarethen Church provide historical landmarks; numerous marked hiking trails lead through the Frankenhöhe Nature Park, which surrounds Lehrberg. There is also a cycle route connecting the town with four other municipalities. When choosing a holiday apartment, what you want to focus on may be decisive: local history, a hike, or a longer bike ride.

Chapel Ruin and Churches

The ruins of St. Jobst Chapel are Lehrberg’s landmark. They preserve a choir tower dating from 1430 and are considered the remains of a penitential chapel built around 1430. The hill where the chapel stood is still called Kapellenberg (Chapel Hill). Here, a tangible architectural remnant and a continuing landscape name come together; each preserves the connection to the former chapel in a different way.

St. Margarethen Church is also one of Lehrberg’s attractions. It was first mentioned in a document in 1059 and took on its present form in 1731. The dates mark different milestones: 1059 is the first documentary mention, while 1731 marks the form the church later took. Together with the ruins of St. Jobst, they offer a picture of the town’s churches that encompasses both an early written reference and architectural evidence from the 15th century.

Hiking and Cycling

Lehrberg is surrounded by numerous marked hiking trails through the hilly, wooded Frankenhöhe Nature Park. The Lehrberger Weg is one specific option: the hike is 15.2 kilometers long and leads into a wooded area near Lehrberg. Along the signposted route, you can leave the trail and climb Kappellbuck in Lehrberg.

The NorA cycle route covers a different scale: it is about 56 kilometers long and connects Lehrberg with Oberdachstetten, Rügland, Weihenzell, and Flachslanden. It is considerably longer than the 15.2-kilometer Lehrberger Weg; the activities also differ, with one being a hike and the other a bike ride. You can therefore weigh up a named hiking route with an optional climb against a longer cycling route connecting several towns.

Townscape and Geological Name

Architectural details in the historic town center also offer a special insight into local history. The houses display different gable orientations. These differences are attributed to the town’s former administration by the archbishops of Eichstätt and the lords of Birkenfels. The gables thus connect a visible feature of the townscape with two historical administrative affiliations.

A geological name is also part of the region’s character: a Keuper layer found in the area around Lehrberg is called the Lehrberg Formation. While gables and churches are tangible elements of the townscape, the Lehrberg Formation refers to the wider surroundings and adds a geological perspective to the picture of Lehrberg.

Annual Festivals

Festivals may also play a part in deciding when to visit. An official guide from 2023 listed the village festival for the second weekend in August and the church fair for the second weekend in September. It listed the Christmas market for the second Sunday of Advent. As event dates can change from year to year, check the current dates if you are planning your stay around them.
