Architectural History and Art in Grafing
The Market Church of the Most Holy Trinity was built in 1672. The town hall is also a remarkable building: it is the only Baroque town hall in the district of Ebersberg. The Gefreite Haus was almost entirely rebuilt in 1745, giving it almost the same appearance it has today. The three buildings point to different aspects of Grafing’s architectural history, while the town’s history extends beyond any single period.
Another destination nearby is Elkofen Castle in Unterelkofen. The castle lies two kilometres south of Grafing town centre and is one of the best-preserved castles in Upper Bavaria. Its location outside the town centre sets this excursion apart from buildings in the town itself. If you are interested in castles, you can consider adding Elkofen Castle to your plans alongside Grafing’s attractions.
The Museum of the City of Grafing has religious folk art and a 14-panel reverse-glass Stations of the Cross among its permanent exhibitions. The Stations of the Cross were created by Alfred Schöpffe (1917–1992), a painter from Grafing. The museum’s collection also includes oil paintings and lithographs by Max Joseph Wagenbauer (1775–1829), who was also from Grafing. Wagenbauer was a widely known artist of the Munich School. The varied collections offer insights into both religious folk art and the work of a landscape painter.
Landscape, Cycling and Nature
Grafing lies at 518 m above sea level. The valley, open to the south, and the rolling terminal moraine landscape in the surrounding area shape the character of the landscape. If you like to combine your stay with outdoor activities, Grafing offers a range of options: an extensive network of cycle paths runs through and around Grafing and across the entire region east of Munich. The town is a suitable starting point for both short and longer rides. This lets you plan your trip around shorter outings or longer cycling tours, without specifying a particular distance.
Grafing also offers a wide range of activities for walkers and nature lovers. A special stop for anyone interested in plants is the medicinal herb garden in Grafing town park. The garden provides information about the ingredients and uses of various medicinal plants. You can explore nature not only through the surrounding landscape, but also by learning about specific plants and their uses.
Guided Town Tours and Grafing Traditions
Grafing’s 2026 guided town tour programme includes 30 tours from March onward, covering a total of eight themes. These include the town’s history, the flora and fauna of the Grafing area, and the regional economy as part of the food tours. Each theme offers a different focus: you can explore the town’s history, learn about nature, or make the regional economy the starting point for a tour. Information is available about the themes offered, private group bookings, advance ticket outlets and town guides.
Another local tradition is the Leonhardi Ride. In Grafing, it still takes place on the last Sunday in October. If you want to plan your trip around a particular interest, you can choose between distinct focuses: art and architectural history, a themed guided town tour, cycling or nature observation. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these aspects you would like to make the focus of your stay.
