Baroque-Style Parish Church and Late Gothic Sculpture

The Parish Church of the Visitation of Mary in Forstinning was given a Baroque makeover in 1765/66 by Munich master builder Baltasar Trischberger. A late Gothic sculpture depicting the Lamentation of Christ stands on the altar. It provides a different art-historical accent from the church’s Baroque design.

The well-preserved ceiling frescoes also tell the story of the church interior’s imagery: they depict the Visitation of Mary and the veneration of Mary by Pope Sylvester. The frescoes date from the period when the church acquired its present appearance in 1765/66. Together, they offer different ways to explore the building’s history—through its Baroque transformation, the late Gothic sculpture and the ceiling paintings.

Nature Trail and Cycle Route

The Forstinning Nature Trail starts at the Forstinning Forest Cemetery. It is 1.5 kilometres long, easy to walk and runs mostly through the Ebersberger Forst state forest. Its length and walking description make it a clearly defined way to get to know the surroundings on foot.

The Sempt-Mangfall cycle route offers a different perspective: it passes through Forstinning on its way into the Ebersberger Forst. The two routes therefore differ in their mode of travel and description. For the nature trail, the starting point and length are specified; the cycle route is described by its path through Forstinning towards the forest.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Forstinning, you can choose your location based on the interests you want to shape your stay. Church art, a measured walking route and a cycle route offer different focuses. Consider which of these themes matter most to your trip planning, and include Forstinning in your selection accordingly.

More to Discover in the Wider Ebersberg Destination

The wider Ebersberg destination also offers distinctive nature and cultural attractions. In the Ebersberger Forst, an observation tower can be reached by climbing 169 steps. From there, the view extends across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu; on exceptionally clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high can also be seen. The Forest and Environment Museum offers another way to explore the woods. It has been located right by the Ebersberger Forst since 2004 and focuses on the history of forest use and forest ecology.

The Ebersberger Forst Environmental Education Centre has been awarded the Bavarian quality seal “Umweltbildung.Bayern” and runs educational programmes on sustainable development. These take place mainly outdoors and in the adjacent forest. Visits for school classes and other groups are possible.

Regional traditions include the Kirchseeon Perchten Run, a fixture in the run-up to Christmas. Every year, strikingly designed masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells delight numerous visitors in the town of Kirchseeon. The annual harvest thanksgiving festival at Herrmannsdorfer is a culinary highlight, with treats including fire-pit specialities, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, freshly made Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer. The stables and workshops also open their doors for the occasion.
