Views and Local Connections in Aßling

The viewing area at Büchsenberg in Aßling has been given a new look, and the steps leading up to the “Aßling Panoramic View” have been replaced. The municipality reported on the completed work on October 31, 2024. This makes the viewpoint a tangible place of interest for anyone curious about the view across the town.

St. George Aßling is a Catholic parish in the Aßling parish association. Since January 1, 2009, the association has included the Catholic parishes of Aßling-St. George, Emmering-St. Pankratius, and Frauenneuharting-Mariä Heimsuchung, as well as the curacies of Dorfen-St. Aegidius and Steinkirchen-St. Martin. The swimming pool on Schulstraße, on the grounds of Aßling Primary and Middle School, also has a history of renovation: it reopened after extensive work.

In the Ebersberg Forest, the observation tower leads up 169 steps. Those who climb them can look out across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. Historical traces are also among the attractions in Ebersberg. A branch of the Roman road led to Roman farmsteads in Poing, discovered during construction work in 2004. In Grafing, the city museum offers special and permanent exhibitions that provide insights into artistic highlights from the surrounding area, as well as the lives and work of people in the Grafing region.

Elkofen Castle is in Unterelkofen, two kilometers south of Grafing’s town center. It is one of the best-preserved castles in Upper Bavaria. A wide, deep moat surrounds the complex; it was once filled with water. For a museum visit in Grafing, the museum lists opening hours as Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. It is closed on public holidays. Check the hours again shortly before your visit.

The Perchten Run in Kirchseeon, in the market town of Kirchseeon, is part of the pre-Christmas traditions. It takes place every year and attracts many visitors. Elaborate masks and costumes, drums, and bells set the mood. Another seasonal event is the farm festival at Herrmannsdorfer, held once a year at harvest time. It features specialties cooked over an open fire, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, freshly made Auszogne pastries, and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer. The barns and workshops also open their doors.

Agriculture is another regional point of interest: the former Herrmannsdorf estate, east of Glonn, is a well-known model project for organic farming that attracts interest beyond the region. Together with the forest and museum attractions, it shows another side of the wider Ebersberg destination beyond viewpoints and local traditions.
