Wayside Shrines on the Northern Route
The Northern Route is about 51 kilometres long and passes 67 wayside shrines. It is signposted with blue markers as the “Wayside Shrine Trail” and uses paved cycle paths almost throughout. The circular route passes through Wasserlosen and Greßthal. If you would like to include a longer option, consider the eastern extension: it adds about 29 kilometres and 42 more wayside shrines to the Northern Route. The first key decision when planning your route is therefore whether to take the Northern Route or include the additional loop. Churches and Collections in the Municipality
In Wasserlosen itself stands the Catholic Church of St Simon and Jude, dating from the time of Julius Echter (1602). Another architectural landmark is St Cyriacus in Schwemmelsbach, in the municipality of Wasserlosen: the church was built to plans by Balthasar Neumann. The Greßthal Parish Museum is housed in a Baroque parish rectory in Greßthal, a district of the municipality of Wasserlosen. Its historic library holds more than 400 specialist books for the clergy, mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection also includes parish treasures spanning more than 550 years of parish history and an archaeological section introducing the region’s prehistory and early history. The library, parish treasures and archaeology each offer a different perspective, leading from ecclesiastical heritage and books to the region’s much earlier settlement and cultural history.
In Rütschenhausen, also a district of the municipality, the German-American Postwar Museum displays hundreds of objects from the final phase of the Second World War and the subsequent postwar period. The exhibition covers more than 600 square metres. The pilgrimage church of Maria von der Tann is also in Rütschenhausen. These different themes can be found side by side: the end of the war and the postwar period, and a place shaped by religion.
Traces of Early Settlement and Walking Routes
The deserted settlement of Höchstadt in the Reichthal valley near Wasserlosen was inhabited from the Neolithic period through to the Middle Ages. This long timespan makes the site a distinct way to explore the history of settlement in the area. If you are more interested in a designated walking route, Wülfershausen offers the Kohlenbrennertour, a circular hiking trail. The municipality of Wasserlosen’s favourite spot is also in Wülfershausen, just behind the Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, with a reclining bench on site. The circular trail and this spot offer different ways to discover the municipality: getting active on a hike or taking a break at a named location.
