Euerbach: Fortified Church, Cultural Trails and Passion Play History
Accommodation in Euerbach
A crypt bearing a date, a garden in the Gadenanlage and a hiking trail that passes right by the boundary-stone garden: Euerbach offers specific reasons to discover local history and Christian culture. There are also special landmarks, such as a wayside shrine depicting St James dating from 1518 and the Passion Play history in Sömmersdorf. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these different highlights.

Fortified Church, Garden and Boundary-Stone Garden
The historic fortified church encloses the Protestant Church of St Cosmas and Damian. Its crypt dates from 1251. The Bible Garden lies around the church in the Gadenanlage: the Evangelical Lutheran parish created it and opened it to the public. Check for any access restrictions before visiting.
The boundary-stone garden lies directly on the Kulturachter hiking trail, which passes right by it. The garden is open to visitors year-round and is described as unique in Germany. This makes it possible to combine time outdoors with a look at the special collection in one particular place. If you prefer to discover culture through individual historic landmarks, another distinctive feature in Euerbach’s townscape is the wayside shrine to St James in the square in front of the old fire station, which bears the date 1518. The stone relief depicts St James and two scallop shells.
Trails and Visiting Options
The approximately 100-metre-long Peace Trail winds uphill alongside the surviving concrete base of the “Würzburger Riese” radar unit to a viewpoint. Its length and the visible concrete base give the trail its own clearly defined character. Pilgrims on the Way of St James can get a pilgrim stamp at the town hall during opening hours and sign the hiking register.
To the west of Euerbach, in the direction of Obbach, visits and guided tours of the Jewish cemetery can be arranged by appointment through the Euerbach municipal administration. If you plan to visit, arrange a time in advance with the municipal administration.
Passion Play History in Sömmersdorf
In Sömmersdorf, the Franconian Passion Plays are at the heart of a distinctive cultural history. They take place every five years on the open-air stage in Münsterholz. As performances follow this schedule, check the organiser’s current programme if you are planning a visit.
The Passion Garden is a quiet area with a permanent open-air exhibition about the history of religious drama and the Sömmersdorf Passion Plays. The permanent exhibition at the Passion Gallery includes films of the Passion Plays, historic documents, posters, stage design sketches and old costumes. The wooden cross from the first performance in 1933 is also preserved there. The Passion Trails around Sömmersdorf also start at the Passion Gallery. A path of 15 stone slabs bearing quotations from the Passion story leads through the Passion Gate and refers to the Way of the Cross.
