Gothic art and Franconian brewing culture

The Johanniskapelle Museum “Art and Spirit of the Gothic” is housed in the Johanniskapelle, built in 1497, and the adjoining sacristan’s house. The museum opened in October 2006. On display are sculptures and reliefs by artists such as Tilman Riemenschneider and Hans Schäufelin, as well as wooden panel paintings, bells, a Gothic Bible and liturgical vessels. The collection brings together various forms of religious art and objects; visitors particularly interested in sculpture will find independent sculptures alongside the reliefs.

A different collecting focus awaits you at the Gerolzhofen Beer Stein and Brewery Memorabilia Museum. This small, privately run museum houses around 3,000 stoneware beer steins spanning more than 100 years of Franconian and Bavarian brewing culture. Its focus is therefore not sacred art, but an everyday object and its long-standing connection to regional brewing culture. Together with the Gothic museum, it offers a clear contrast for a stay that makes room for different aspects of cultural history.

Townscape and trails into the countryside

The historic townscape includes the Steigerwald Cathedral, the medieval town hall and a double ring of town walls. These buildings and features give the old town its historic character. If you are interested in the townscape, you can make them themes for your exploration and combine your visit with the collections.

Several named routes of different lengths and itineraries are available for hiking. Circular route G1 – Gerolzhofen 1 is 9.5 km long. It starts at the Berliner Straße car park and passes Neuer See, the fitness trail, Waldesruh, Alterberg, the forest kindergarten, Wiebelsberger Straße, the model airfield, Gertraudiskapelle and the Jewish cemetery before returning to the starting point. Circular route G2 – Gerolzhofen 2 goes around Gerolzhofen and is 8.5 km long. For a shorter route, G4 offers another designated option at 4.8 km: the loop starts at the tennis club and passes Seeweg, Allesgarten, the vineyards, the monument, Weidach and Nützelbachsee before returning there.

Other circular routes offer different highlights. G3 is 7.8 km long and runs from Nördliche Allee past the Protestant church, Weiße Marter, Hörnauer See, Hörnauer Wald and the Volkach weir, before returning to Nördliche Allee. G5 is 6.2 km long; its loop starts at the Berliner Straße car park and passes the go-kart track, Lindlachshof, the Dingolshausen sports field, Volkach and Neuer See before returning to the starting point. The Blue Spoon hiking trail has a 6.3 km section in Gerolzhofen. The Weinsteiger runs through Donnersdorf, Gerolzhofen and Oberschwarzach and is 7.3 km long. The 45 km-long Main hiking trail also passes through Gerolzhofen, among other places. The route lengths make it easier to include hikes of different durations in your plans.

Herb garden and getting oriented locally

At the southern edge of town lies the Nützelbachaue medicinal herb garden, in the nearby Nützelbachaue recreation area. The publicly accessible, barrier-free garden displays native, medicinal and protected plants across around 160 m² in twelve themed areas. These include culinary herbs, fragrant and poisonous plants, and plants used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Visitors interested in plants and their different uses will find a distinct focus for a visit here, in addition to the museums and hiking trails.

The Gerolzhofen Tourist Information Office offers detailed maps for hikers and cyclists and can help you choose individual routes. It also arranges guided tours of Gerolzhofen’s old town and medicinal herb garden, as well as museums in the region. Wine tastings and vineyard tours in the Weinpanorama Steigerwald are also available. This can be particularly useful if you would like to include different interests in your stay and are looking for a suitable route or guided tour. The 2Franken Cycle Route, which connects Lower and Upper Franconia, also passes through Gerolzhofen.

When choosing your holiday apartment, you can start by deciding on the focus you want: the museums and historic townscape lend themselves to a culture-focused itinerary, while the designated routes offer concrete options for hiking days. The herb garden and Tourist Information Office’s services add botany, guided tours and wine experiences to the mix. This way, you can plan your stay around the topics that interest you and your fellow travellers most.
