Walderbach: Monastic History, Art and Gardens

The former monastery buildings now house the Cham District Museum. Its exhibitions explore the history and living conditions of Walderbach Monastery. The museum’s folklore collections have also been housed in the Baroque convent building of the former Cistercian monastery of Walderbach on the River Regen since 1965. The site brings together a range of subjects: you can learn about monastic life as well as explore folklore collections.

The accessible “SchauRaum” on the ground floor of the Walderbach District Museum is a dedicated space for temporary exhibitions. As the exhibitions change, this space offers a different perspective from the exhibitions on the monastery’s history: the focus can shift to various aspects of everyday life and the past. The former monastery church also shapes Walderbach’s historic character. This three-aisled hall dates from the 12th century and features significant Romanesque vault paintings. St. Mary and St. Nicholas contains a rare depiction of the “Christ with the Shoulder Wound.” Christ is chained in a prison niche, with a wound gaping on his left shoulder. The Stations of the Cross in St. Mary and St. Nicholas are also dated to 1735. These two subjects offer culturally minded travellers specific details to look out for when exploring sacred art.

Another Baroque detail can be found in the former monastery’s banqueting hall: its ceiling painting is by Otto Gebhard and is dated to around 1765/70. The former monastery garden is now the Walderbach District Teaching Garden. The Prälatengarten (Prelate’s Garden), with its fountain, offers a different experience: a stroll through this garden is another of the things you can enjoy during a visit to Walderbach.
