Treffelstein combines local history with trails through the landscape and leisure activities in the nearby Silver Lake area. Dragon Tower and Local History
On 12 September 2021, the information centre at the Dragon Tower was opened in the former water reservoir at the Dragon Tower. Its roof terrace offers panoramic views. The Dragon Tower, located in the centre of the village, is privately owned and can be viewed from the outside. A Gothic relief dating from around 1480 is located in the baptismal chapel of Treffelstein church. Thus, Treffelstein brings together a former utility building, a tower that can be viewed from the outside, and a Gothic work of art as distinct points of historical interest.
On Foot or by Mountain Bike
The Sägmühlenweg starts at the church in Treffelstein and leads via the main road, a short stretch of Silberseestraße and field paths to Silver Lake. Along the Silver Lake circular hiking trail (Tb10), it follows the reactivated millrace. A nature observation station and a waterwheel are also along the way; the waterwheel marks the site of the former sawmill. The Sägmühlenweg therefore combines a hiking route with information about how the area was used in the past. A short section of the Trans Bayerwald mountain bike route passes through the municipality of Treffelstein. For trip planning, these are two different active options: a hike with Silver Lake as its destination and a short mountain bike tour through the municipality.
Silver Lake: Circular Trail, Leisure and Nature
Leisure activities offered at Silver Lake include swimming, paddling, sailing, surfing and fishing. The Silver Lake circular hiking trail is about seven kilometres long and passes three beaches with sunbathing lawns, as well as regularly spaced benches and covered rest areas. In addition to this approximate length, an accessibility-related measurement gives a distance of 6.4 kilometres. For the period from May 2024 to April 2027, the trail is certified as step-free and mostly easy to walk or travel along.
After the lake was dammed, nature was left to take its course along the northern and western shores, allowing a biotope to develop there. The Silver Lake area provides habitats for amphibians, reptiles, insects, birds and fish; beavers and bats also find suitable conditions there. The circular trail and rest areas offer a different perspective on the lake from its natural shore areas. The description of the biotope refers specifically to the northern and western shores.
