At 16 km, Circular Trail 4 is the longest of the five routes described. Church and Castle History
The church in Geiersthal served as the church of the former original parish of Geiersthal and was first mentioned in a document in 1209. Circular Trail 1 starts at the Geiersthal branch church, so the church is also part of the route described.
The associated municipality is home to Altnußberg Castle and the Altnußberg Castle Museum. The castle was the seat of the knights of Nußberg and Degenberg. It was completely destroyed after the Böckler War; its foundations were unearthed and partly rebuilt in the previous century. The castle museum displays weapons, jewellery, household items and utensils found during excavations in the castle ruins. The exhibits date from the 13th to the 15th century. The castle’s history and the objects found there thus offer two different ways of exploring the past.
Green Spaces and Landscaped Areas
A small green park lies in the centre of Geiersthal. Nearby, a newly landscaped area around the town hall, school, church and “Zum Kramerwirt” hotel invites you to linger: a pond and a children’s playground provide another place to visit.
