Zwiesel offers visitors several distinct themes: the Sculpture Trail featuring works by local artists, the Glass Pyramid and the history of the underground tunnel system. There are also hiking trails and events with their own dates. This mix can help guide your search for a holiday apartment: first decide whether art, glass, hiking or a specific event date should shape your holiday.

Sculpture Trail and Glass Art

More than 40 works by local artists enrich the Zwiesel Sculpture Trail. Most of the artworks are in the town centre; the trail can be explored on foot, in individual stages. The collection may change as works are added or removed; some artworks are on loan.

The Glass Pyramid makes a different statement: it consists of 93,665 machine-blown Tritan crystal glasses from the “Neckar” wine goblet series. The glasses are stacked loosely, without adhesive, in 65 tiers. The exact number of glasses and the construction make the structure an unusual example of glass design in Zwiesel.

Glass Night and Summer Concerts

The Zwiesel Glass Night takes place every year in mid-August. Glassblowing demonstrations, exhibition venues and stalls centred on glass are held in the town centre. Dates and programme may vary; if you want to plan your trip around this event, check the specific dates before booking. In 2026, the Zwiesel Summer Concerts offered special musical evenings under the open sky. Dates and performers vary each year, so if music is a focus, checking the relevant programme is part of planning your trip.

Underground History and Rabenstein

In times of danger and hardship, the tunnel system in Zwiesel served an essential historical function: escape routes, hiding places and storerooms helped ensure survival. Participation in tours of the underground tunnels is possible only after confirming your booking with the tourist information office. If you want to include this topic in your trip, remember to make a reservation.

The Stormberger Museum is located in the village hall on the village square in the mountain village of Rabenstein, 4 km from Zwiesel. This location adds a second named point to the focus on Zwiesel town centre.

Hiking and Regional Contrasts

Zwiesel also offers an excellently marked network of hiking trails spanning more than 150 km in total. Unlike the Sculpture Trail, which can be explored on foot in stages, this offers a broader focus on hiking. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can consider whether art in the town centre or hiking should play a greater role in your holiday.

In the wider destination of Regen

If you broaden your search to include the wider destination of Regen, more themes come into play. In the town of Regen, public guided tours regularly present the beer and ice cellars as the historic “Regen Underworld” and explain their history. There are also 13 terrain therapy trails in and around the town of Regen.

The quartz rocks near the Weißenstein castle ruins were placed under nature protection in 1940 because of their geological significance. The Pfahl near Weißenstein is an important habitat for rare heat- and drought-loving animal and plant species adapted to nutrient-poor sites. This makes it possible to see Zwiesel, with its art and glass themes, as one focus, and include Regen, with its own cultural, trail and landscape features, in your wider selection.
