Stations of the Cross and Hiking Trail

The Stations of the Cross on Kalvarienberg Moosbach are 700 metres long. From the 12th station, the route climbs gently to a natural rise in the Pfahl. Three crosses mark the end of the route. Groups of visitors come throughout the year, especially during Lent, to walk the Stations of the Cross and pray. Their religious significance is therefore not limited to Lent, even though it is particularly prominent then.

Another hiking trail starts in the centre of Prackenbach and leads to the former Regentalbahn railway line. This line was converted into the Regental Cycle Route. The East Bavarian Way of St James also passes through the municipality of Prackenbach. The routes have different focuses: Kalvarienberg features a specific Stations of the Cross route and devotional practice; the hiking trail starts in the town centre, while the Way of St James offers another pilgrimage route option for the municipality.

Church and Historical Landmarks in Moosbach

The parish church of St John in Moosbach was built in the Romanesque style. Moosbach is first mentioned in the Wittelsbach Urbarbuch, a land register dating from 1222 to 1228. The Swedish Cross near Moosbach is a visible remnant of earlier ideas about law and justice. Together, these landmarks offer different perspectives: the church represents Romanesque architecture, the Swedish Cross recalls earlier ideas about law, and the first written mention places Moosbach in the town’s documented history.

In the town of Regen, public guided tours regularly introduce visitors to the beer and ice cellars as the historic “Regener Underworld” and explain their history. This offers a different way to explore the past than the church and Swedish Cross in Moosbach.

The quartz rocks at Weißenstein Castle Ruins were placed under nature protection as early as 1940 because of their geological significance. The Pfahl at Weißenstein is an important habitat for rare plant and animal species that favour warm, dry conditions and are adapted to nutrient-poor locations. Thus, both the geological significance of the rocks and the special habitat conditions of these species are among the nature-related themes of the wider Regen destination.

There are various ways to stay active there: 13 terrain therapy trails are located in and around the town of Regen. Skates and equipment can be hired on site at the Regen Ice Sports Centre. Both skating and diagonal techniques are possible on the Grubhügel cross-country ski trail. The Beer Experience Hike is about 5 kilometres long; almost half of the route runs directly alongside the Regen River. These activities vary in terms of what you can do and the surrounding environment, and they are not all located in Prackenbach.
