Eging am See combines activities on the water with hiking and cycling. There are several options at Lake Eging: a long sandy beach, a swimming jetty, a swimming island and a sunbathing lawn. Beach volleyball is also available. Swimming is dependent on the season and weather. Pedal boats and stand-up paddleboards can be rented at the lake; check with the local operator before your visit. For younger children, there is a heated granite water area with three paddling and activity pools at different heights, connected by waterslides.

Hiking Trails by the Lake and in Eging

The “Spurensuche” themed hiking trail is a 3.5-kilometre circular route with 20 informative stops. It runs along forest and field paths and, in places, the lakeside promenade through a species-rich mixed forest. Its theme and stops give the route its own character, while the trail takes in several different sections.

Two hiking trails lead directly around Lake Eging and showcase the neighbouring Bavarian Forest. A second hiking route around the lake is about 8.5 kilometres long. In addition, there are ten hiking trails in and around Eging, ranging from just under three to over 18 kilometres, for beginners and experienced hikers. This offers a choice from shorter routes to considerably longer hikes. The distances can help you plan a day’s hike around your preferred route length, without limiting the local hiking options to the lake.

Cycling and Exercise in the Kurpark

The approximately 45-kilometre Danube-Ilz Cycle Route runs directly through Eging am See along a former railway line. If you are planning a cycling trip, check the current route conditions in advance. The fitalPARC in Eging’s Kurpark offers a different kind of exercise: the slightly elevated path has six platforms with strength-training equipment, connected by five long coordination sections. This means that, alongside routes through the countryside, you can also choose specific exercise stations in the Kurpark.

Culture in the Wider Passau Destination

The wider Passau destination also includes the Bavarian Forest Open-Air Museum in Tittling. It is one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. Visitors can explore more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest dating from 1580 to 1890 across 20 hectares. The museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments. Germany’s oldest village school, dating from 1666, is also located there. This glimpse into historic architecture adds a distinct cultural note alongside Eging am See’s lake and recreational activities.

Choose the Focus of Your Holiday

To decide whether Eging am See suits your plans, you can weigh the local options according to the mix of activities you want each day: swimming and lake activities, the 3.5-kilometre themed trail, other hiking routes or cycling on the Danube-Ilz Cycle Route. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide which experiences you want to shape your stay. The different trail lengths and the lake activities offer concrete points of reference, without requiring you to assume anything about the features of individual accommodations.
