Discover Beutelsbach via Kleeberg: The circular trail leads from the village square along country lanes uphill to Kleeberg, which offers views across the Bavarian Forest. You will also encounter traces of different eras there, from burial mounds to the monument commemorating the Battle of Aidenbach, in which farmers fought. The landscape and local history come together along this trail. This gives your search for a holiday apartment a specific point of reference: Would you like to choose Beutelsbach mainly for its Kleeberg attractions, or also take account of other destinations in the wider Passau holiday region?

Things to experience at Kleeberg

The Kleeberg circular trail climbs uphill along country lanes. At the top, the view stretches across the Bavarian Forest. Kleeberg is also home to one of three monuments commemorating the Battle of Aidenbach in 1706. It commemorates the more than 2,000 fallen members of the peasant army, who fought for their rights to freedom. This memorial site connects the landscape at Kleeberg with an important chapter in regional history.

The traces at Kleeberg reach back even further: Around 3,800 years ago, the first people of Beutelsbach built burial mounds there. They placed grave goods with the deceased for what they believed would be life in the afterlife. This means that evidence from widely separated periods stands side by side at this site: prehistoric graves and the monument to the 1706 battle.

Stops highlighting local history and nature

Along the circular trail, activity stations provide information about Beutelsbach’s local history, prehistory and the Bronze Age, as well as the monument and the battle. Other topics include the Kleeberg and Reitholz burial mound fields and the Schratzel passages of Unterholzen. The stations thus cover both the history of the village and a range of historical sites.

Nature is also a theme along the way. Along the hiking trails, quiz, interactive and information stations explore habitats and local animal and plant diversity. This includes the many herbs found on Kleeberg. The different formats offer a variety of ways to engage with these topics: the trail experience includes not only information but also quizzes and hands-on activities.

In the wider Passau holiday region

The wider Passau holiday region provides its own regional setting: the Passau region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal baths. Thermal springs known far and wide are found in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. These places and landscapes are part of the region’s offerings and should be distinguished from Beutelsbach’s particular features.

In Tittling, the Bavarian Forest Open-Air Museum is one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. On 20 hectares, visitors can see more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest, dating from 1580 to 1890. The museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments. Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666, can also be seen there.

Another regional highlight is the Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre. It is located in the narrow Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. The Danube Cycle Path runs through the Passau region and received a four-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Federation. If this rating is important for your plans, check its current status. The Granite Adventure Hiking Trail runs around Hauzenberg; the Smuggler’s Trail is also in the Danube Pearls area.

Cultural events are also part of the regional offerings: Ortenburg Castle Culture is an event series organised by the Friends of Ortenburg Castle. From April to December, it features musical performances, cabaret shows, spooky nights at Ortenburg Castle, lectures and guided tours. Check the dates for the relevant season if you are planning a visit.
