Tittling: Granite Labyrinth, VIA NOVA and Washhouse
Accommodation in Tittling
Tittling is about more than just one attraction: a former washhouse with an art garden, the Granite Labyrinth on Blümersberg and the Dreiburgenland Loop each offer a different focus. When planning your stay, you can consider cultural history, a walk and sections of the trails as separate highlights.
Washhouse, Art Garden and Bible Garden
The former washhouse in Tittling was built in 1913 by merchant Josef Machhaus and restored under the leadership of the Kunst & Kulturgruppe Dreiburgenland. The adjoining art garden at the washhouse features art objects on the themes of water and washing. The history of the building and the garden’s theme thus come together as a cultural highlight.
St. Vitus Bible Garden is another garden in Tittling. As a living garden, its plant life changes over time, so what you see may vary.
The Labyrinth and Trails on Blümersberg
The labyrinth on Blümersberg is made of local granite, has seven circuits and a path length of 210 metres. A walking path leads from Tittling’s market square to Blümersberg via the Bergsteigerl; the walk takes about ten minutes. This information helps you plan this particular walk as a separate part of your itinerary.
The Dreiburgenland Loop on the VIA NOVA Circular Trail meets the northern VIA NOVA route on Blümersberg and descends to Tittling’s market square. From there, stairs lead to the Danube-Ilz Cycle Path. The Dreiburgenland Loop also runs from Roitham along the Danube-Ilz Cycle Path to the emergency operations centre in Tittling. Check the exact routes and conditions locally before setting out.
There are two VIA NOVA pilgrimage route audio guide stations in Tittling: at the 1,000-year-old lime tree and on Blümersberg. If you plan to include these stations in your itinerary, check their current status in advance.
Open-Air Museum on Lake Dreiburgensee
The Bavarian Forest Open-Air Museum is located near Tittling, on Lake Dreiburgensee. It comprises more than 140 buildings, mostly furnished, representing different types of houses and farmsteads in the Bavarian Forest from the 18th to the early 20th century. Examples include mills, sawmills, field monuments and chapels. Alongside Tittling’s local cultural heritage, it offers a separate insight into the region’s historic buildings and farmsteads.
Other highlights in the wider Passau destination
If you want to consider a wider area when choosing where to stay, the greater Passau destination offers additional nature and culture highlights. The Passau region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal spas; well-known thermal springs are located in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. The Danube Cycle Path runs through the Passau region and received a 4-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Association (ADFC). As certification status can change, it is worth checking the current rating if this is of particular interest.
The Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre is also located in the Danube gorge between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. Other hiking highlights in the Passau region include the Granite Adventure Trail around Hauzenberg and the Smugglers’ Trail in the Danube Pearls. The Ortenburg Castle Culture programme adds a cultural highlight. Organised by the Förderkreis Schloss Ortenburg, this series runs from April to December and includes music events, cabaret performances, spooky nights at the castle, lectures and guided tours; check the dates seasonally.
Choose the right base
When looking for a holiday apartment, first decide whether you want to focus on Tittling’s local history and the trails on Blümersberg, or include other highlights across the Passau destination. Then compare the location of each specific option with your plans. This way, you can choose a base that suits the experiences that matter to you during your stay.
