Pfronten can be explored from several perspectives: mountain meadows and trails, legends surrounding Breitenberg, and a viewpoint in a castle ruin each offer a different focus. Hiking trails lead through mountain meadows up 1,838-metre-high Breitenberg, Pfronten’s local mountain. The trails therefore cross the meadows on their way up the mountain, whose elevation provides a specific reference point for planning your hikes.
Breitenberg: Trails, Gondola and Seasons
The Breitenberg cable car takes hikers up Breitenberg by gondola in just over a quarter of an hour. If you include the cable car in your day’s plans, check its current operating status before your trip. Activities also vary by season: In summer, Breitenberg offers hiking and mountain biking tours. In winter, seasonal options include skiing, winter hiking and tobogganing; these depend on conditions and whether the facilities are operating.
Around Pfronten, groomed trails are available for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. This gives you two skiing styles to choose from, while snow conditions and trail grooming remain seasonal and variable. Pfronten Tourism also offers guided cycling tours and guided snowshoe tours. The Jewel Trail on Breitenberg presents legends surrounding Aggenstein and the Venedigermännlein. The Trilogie Circular Trail offers a different perspective on Pfronten, providing insights into the history of the town. At Falkenstein Castle Ruins, a viewing platform at 1,277 metres offers panoramic views of the Allgäu Alps and the Alpine foothills. The Pfronten Schalengge race draws on the “Schalenggen”: These large sleds were once used to transport hay and wood from mountain meadows and forests down into the valley. The race has a long tradition.
Activities and Play Options in Pfronten
The Höllschlucht forest ropes course is located in the district of Kappel and has 11 courses with more than 100 challenges. A 3D archery course is also located by the forest ropes course: it is at the foot of Edelsberg, on the edge of Höllschlucht. This means you can take both specific activity options in Kappel into account when planning your holiday.
Playgrounds can also be a consideration when planning with children: Pfronten’s 13 districts have a total of 12 themed playgrounds.
Ostallgäu as the Wider Region
In the wider travel destination of Ostallgäu, the mountains in the southwest of the district belong to the Vilser Gebirge range, while those in the southeast belong to the Ammergebirge range. At 2,082 metres, Hochplatte is the highest mountain in Ostallgäu. The region also has its own cultural highlights: Since 12 July 2025, Neuschwanstein Castle, together with Linderhof Palace, the King’s House on Schachen and Herrenchiemsee Palace, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau can only be visited as part of a guided tour.
