Two Castle Ruins, Two Building Phases
The late medieval hilltop castle of Hohenfreyberg, together with the opposite Eisenberg Castle ruins, forms a castle group visible from afar. The Eisenberg ruins date back to an earlier building phase: this medieval hilltop castle was built around 1315 by the noble lords of Hohenegg. Hohenfreyberg was built from 1418 onwards under Friedrich von Freyberg zu Eisenberg and is considered one of the last major new castles of the Middle Ages. These two dates also give the castle group a temporal dimension.
The Eisenberg Castle ruins feature a wooden viewing platform with views over Zell, a district of Eisenberg, the municipality of Pfronten and the mountain panorama beyond. The Eisenberg-Hohenfreyberg castle hike starts at the town hall or the Eisenberg tourist information office.
The Maria-Hilf pilgrimage church offers a different perspective on history. The Baroque church dates from the 17th century and features ornate Rococo altars and impressive carvings. In Zell, a district of the municipality of Eisenberg, the castle museum displays archaeological finds from excavations at both castle ruins and presents them in an engaging way.
Cheese, Beer and Insights into Production
The Weizern mountain cheese dairy in Eisenberg produces cheese and dairy specialties from fresh, full-fat Allgäu milk supplied by regional hay-milk farmers. Groups and coach parties can book guided tours in advance and sample the specialties.
The Mariahilfer Sudhaus has its own brewery and serves regional cuisine as well as a range of beers brewed on site. The brewery tour lasts about an hour and is available by arrangement.
