Schwangau between royal castles, lakes and hiking trails

Schwangau combines the history of the Bavarian royal family with lakes, mountain scenery and plenty of ways to enjoy active days. Neuschwanstein Castle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria,” while Hohenschwangau Castle has been preserved as an exceptional architectural monument of the Romantic period. Royal history without a fixed itinerary

At the Museum of the Bavarian Kings, you can learn more about the history of the Bavarian royal family. The exhibition spans 16 rooms across two floors and features original exhibits as well as interactive museum technology. You can explore the museum on your own, with or without an audio guide. This gives you the flexibility to view the exhibition at your own pace and tailor your visit to your interests.

There is an important travel rule for the royal castles: they cannot be reached by private car. Visitors should use only the paid car parks P1 to P4 in the Hohenschwangau valley. So if you are planning a castle visit, make sure to factor this into your day. Culture lovers can choose Schwangau as a holiday destination without focusing their entire stay on the castles: the museum, hiking trails and lakes offer other things to explore, too.

Lakes and trails for different kinds of holiday days

Schwangau has a total of four lakes. Each offers its own leisure activities and views of the mountain scenery. If you enjoy spending time on the water, the Forggensee offers sailing, rowing, stand-up paddleboarding and swimming. You can also rent SUP boards, pedal boats and kayaks there, or take lessons. The Forggensee covers an area of around 17 square kilometres.

From June to mid-October, you can explore the Forggensee on a one- or two-hour boat trip. It’s another way to enjoy time on the water, this time out on the lake. On the southern shore of the Alpsee is the Alpseebad, a natural outdoor swimming area with a wooden jetty, a floating island and extensive sunbathing lawns. These two waterside destinations offer different experiences: water sports and boat trips are the focus at the Forggensee, while the Alpseebad is all about spending time at a natural outdoor swimming area.

There is also a wide choice of hikes, from shorter walks to more challenging tours. Schwangau has more than 120 kilometres of hiking trails, including easy walking routes, half- and full-day hikes, and challenging mountain tours. A free hiking pass for children and adults is available from the Schwangau Tourist Information office; it includes routes of varying difficulty. For a flat route option, the certified “Neuschwansteinblick” circular trail runs from Schwangau to Hohenschwangau.

Nature, relaxation and longer routes

Schwangau lies on the Lechweg. This long-distance hiking trail is 125 kilometres long and runs through one of Europe’s last wild river landscapes, from the source of the Lech near Lake Formarinsee in Lech am Arlberg to the Lechfall waterfall in Füssen. If you are interested in longer hiking routes, you can take the trail into account when choosing the focus of your holiday. There is also a network of more than 90 kilometres of cycling routes around Schwangau, with destinations for families, leisure cyclists, e-bike riders and mountain bikers.

Below Hohenschwangau Castle, Schwanseepark was once a royal landscape garden. Today, it is a local recreation area and habitat for rare and protected plants. It offers a different side of Schwangau for a stay focused on peaceful nature, away from castle visits or water sports.
