Natural Monument, Little Fountain House and Church Paintings
The Kohlstetten Peace Linden was declared a natural monument on 21 March 1940. In Kleinengstingen, the little fountain house of the Sauerbrunnen was built in 1938 from Honau calcareous tufa; it remains unchanged to this day. Both stories have a clear connection to a specific time, but they represent different subjects: one a natural monument, the other a structure made from a named material whose condition has been preserved over time.
Another trail leads to St. Blaise’s Church in Kleinengstingen. During its most recent renovation, two dozen of around 200 different Rococo floral arrangements on the ceiling and gallery were made visible again. The arrangements date from the year the church was built, 1770. The two figures refer to different quantities: two dozen were made visible again, while there are around 200 different floral arrangements in total.
Winter Option and Railway
The Engstingen Kohltal cross-country ski trail starts either at the Kohltal lift or at the Weinberg lift. This gives you two possible starting points for a winter activity. Choosing between local history, church art and cross-country skiing offers a practical way to decide what to focus on during your stay.
The Swabian Alb Railway runs from Gammertingen via Trochtelfingen and Engstingen towards Münsingen. If you include the railway in your plans, check the current timetable, as services and timetables may change. In the wider region, bicycles can be carried free of charge on all regular trains of the Swabian Alb Railway. Confirm the current bicycle carriage conditions before travelling.

Public transport does not go directly to Lichtenstein Castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. Check current connections before planning this part of your trip, as public transport services may change.
In Münsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre uses interactive exhibits as well as audio and video contributions to share information about the nature, landscape and people of the biosphere area. The Old Castle also houses the Town Museum in the Castle, which presents the history and culture of the Münsingen Alb. The Biosphere Centre’s educational group activities include felt-making, planting, harvesting and cooking together; programme details may change.
