Hiking along the Alb Escarpment and in the footsteps of the Celts
The six-kilometre-long Celtic Adventure Trail leads through the late Celtic oppidum of Heidengraben. Other hiking trails lead from Hülben along the Alb Escarpment and offer views across the valley. More trails run from Hülben to Hohenneuffen Castle. This lets you explore different hiking themes: the landscape along the Alb Escarpment on one hand, and a trail with the castle as its destination on the other.
A cave discovered in 1978
Another point of historical interest lies directly beneath State Road 250 at the entrance to Hülben from the direction of Bad Urach: a dripstone cave was discovered there in September 1978 during road construction. The discovery connects a prominent village entrance with a specific date and occasion. It adds a more recent story of discovery to Heidengraben’s Celtic past.
Other features of the village
Hülben also has a motor and gliding airfield. This is a distinct aspect of the village, alongside its hiking trails and archaeological heritage. The “Dürrlau” playground lies about 500 metres outside Hülben, surrounded by greenery. Its facilities include a climbing frame, a double swing, two spring riders, a seesaw and a playhouse. There is also a play structure with a slide, sliding pole and suspension bridge, balancing beams, adjoining bushes and hedges, and a barbecue area. Its location outside the village should be taken into account when planning your visit.

The wider travel destination of Reutlingen offers further cultural and scenic attractions. In Zwiefalten, the Minster of Our Lady is the centrepiece of this historic monastery and pilgrimage town; it is one of the most significant examples of German-influenced Late Baroque architecture. Concerts are held in the minster every year, and dates vary.
Another highlight is Lichtenstein Castle, built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. The Hochgehträumt circular trail runs from the castle along scenic cliffs directly to Nebelhöhle Cave. Public transport does not go directly to the castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. Check the latest connections before travelling.
In Münsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre uses interactive exhibits and audio and video contributions to share information about the nature, landscape and people of the biosphere reserve. Educational group activities include felting, as well as planting, harvesting and cooking together; programme details may change. The Old Castle in Münsingen is also home to the Town Museum in the Castle, which explores the history and culture of the Münsinger Alb. Those interested in guided tours can explore the former Münsingen military training area with trained TrÜP guides, either individually or together with other visitors on selected dates throughout the year.
