Lichtenstein offers different options to consider when planning your trip: a groomed cross-country ski trail, a castle story inspired by one of Wilhelm Hauff’s novels, and stages of the Albsteig. You can tailor your stay to whether winter sports, culture or a route through the area should take centre stage.

Ski Trail, Albsteig and Castle History

The groomed Lichtenstein ski trail is 16 kilometres long and designed as a combined trail for Nordic skiing and skating. Grooming depends on conditions. So if you are planning winter sports, take the conditions during your intended travel period into account. Another option is stages 10 and 11 of the Albsteig (HW1), which pass through Lichtenstein. For an active day, you can choose between the 16-kilometre trail for Nordic skiing and skating and stages 10 and 11 of the Albsteig (HW1), which pass through Lichtenstein.

Lichtenstein Castle was built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. The construction was inspired by Wilhelm Hauff’s novel “Lichtenstein”. The Wilhelm Hauff Museum displays works by the writer. Lichtenstein therefore offers a choice of cultural topics: architectural history with a literary connection, and the opportunity to explore Hauff’s work.

If you are travelling with children or several generations, your group’s different interests can guide your day-to-day plans: getting active on the ski trail, exploring a route on the Albsteig, or discovering the castle and the writer’s cultural legacy. When looking for a holiday apartment in Lichtenstein, it helps to first decide which of these themes you want to shape your stay. If the ski trail is a priority, remember that grooming depends on conditions.

More options in the wider Reutlingen destination

In the wider Reutlingen destination, the Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail runs from Lichtenstein Castle along impressive viewpoint cliffs directly to Nebelhöhle cave. In addition, 15 routes in the hochgehberge hiking offer run through the district of Reutlingen; the route network may be revised. If you choose a specific route, check its current course.

Getting to the castle is another point to consider: as of September 2026, public transport does not go directly to Lichtenstein Castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. As transport connections can change, check the current services before your trip.

In Zwiefalten, the Münster of Our Lady is at the heart of the old monastery and pilgrimage town. It is one of the most significant examples of German late Baroque architecture. Münster concerts are held there every year; dates vary. This brings together a significant building and a recurring cultural programme whose specific dates you can take into account when planning.

At the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre in Münsingen, interactive exhibits and audio and video contributions share insights into the nature, landscape and people of the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve. The centre’s educational group activities include felting, planting, harvesting and cooking together; programme details may change. The town museum in the castle offers another perspective on the region: housed in the Old Castle in Münsingen, it presents the history and culture of the Münsingen Alb.

At the former Münsingen military training area, trained TrÜP guides lead visitors on individual tours or, on selected dates during the year, on group tours with other visitors. Dates and booking arrangements may change; check both before planning your visit.
