Hiking around Sternberg and in the Große Lautertal

The Gomadingen circular hiking trail “hochgehsprudelt” runs for 8.7 kilometres around Sternberg and can be hiked in either direction. Along the trail are juniper heaths with diverse flora and fauna, as well as woodland sections. Open heathland and woodland are therefore both part of the scenery on this route. When choosing a hike, you can take this variety into account as well as the trail’s length.

The planetary trail is an astronomical hiking trail in the Große Lautertal. Its twelve stations depict the solar system to scale. The trail is listed as 9.5 kilometres long; the return route adds a further 7.5 kilometres. This distinction matters when comparing it with the 8.7-kilometre circular route: the return distance is explicitly additional for the planetary trail, whereas the distance given for “hochgehsprudelt” describes the loop. The two trails therefore differ not only in theme, but also in their route profiles.

Karst spring and monastery walls in Offenhausen

In Offenhausen, the Große Lauter rises from a karst spring pool surrounded by old monastery walls. The source and the walls bring together two distinctive features of the place: the river Lauter’s origin in a karst spring and the historic setting of the former monastery. This offers a different focus from the trails around Sternberg or the astronomical stations. Those who enjoy structuring their days around different themes will find both hiking trails and a striking spring in Gomadingen.

More highlights in the wider Reutlingen destination

The wider Reutlingen destination also includes distinct cultural attractions. In Zwiefalten, the Minster of Our Lady is the centrepiece of the former monastery and pilgrimage site. It is one of the most significant examples of late Baroque architecture in the German tradition. Minster concerts are held there every year; dates vary. Architecture and music thus offer a different focus from Gomadingen’s hiking trails.

Lichtenstein Castle and the Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail are also highlights in the wider Reutlingen destination. The castle was built from 1840 to 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. Hochgehträumt leads from the castle along impressive scenic cliffs directly to the Nebelhöhle cave. In Reutlingen district, 15 routes from the hochgehberge hiking network also run; the route network may change.

In Münsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre uses interactive exhibits as well as audio and video contributions to share information about the nature, landscape and people of the biosphere area. Its educational group activities include felting, planting, harvesting and cooking together; programme details may change. Münsingen’s Old Castle also houses the Town Museum in the Castle, which presents the history and culture of the Münsinger Alb. Nature and regional history therefore complement the hiking and cultural attractions in the wider Reutlingen destination.
