Beyond its exhibition spaces, the 707-metre-high Achalm, a local landmark, and the Listhof nature reserve offer a change of scene. Half-timbered houses, city walls and collections
Since 1998, the Reutlingen Natural History Museum has been housed in the listed Old Lyceum, an imposing half-timbered building dating from 1727. The Spendhaus tells a story from another era, too: this six-storey half-timbered building was erected in 1518 as a grain store for the charitable foundation’s administration. Today, it is home to the Spendhaus branch of the Reutlingen Art Museum. Its collection focuses on artistic woodcuts and relief printing, from the 19th century to the present day.
The city’s industrial history is represented by machinery and products from Reutlingen’s textile industry and mechanical engineering sector, on display at the Industrial Museum. Two specific objects give this history a date and a name: a loom made by Hermann Wangner in 1849 and a steam engine made by Ulrich Kohllöffel in 1886. Those interested in technology will find different points of interest here than in the art collections. The Tübingen Gate takes visitors further back in time: it was built in 1235 as part of the construction of Reutlingen’s medieval city wall.
Achalm and Listhof: another side of the city
Achalm is Reutlingen’s own mountain and an important landmark. At 707 metres, it is a striking point of reference, while the official “Aussichtsreich” hiking guide lists 14 routes, all within the city limits of Reutlingen.
On the outskirts of the city, the Listhof nature reserve can be explored on foot. The Listhof Environmental Education Centre adds several nature experience areas, biotopes and a bug house to the natural surroundings. Its activities invite visitors to explore and experiment. Nature observation and hands-on activities thus complement the city’s museums and historical attractions, without requiring you to combine everything into a single outing.
Guided tours and culinary discoveries
A historical city tour is offered in Reutlingen on two Sundays each month. Check the specific dates before your trip. If you prefer to explore the sights independently, you can follow the digital “City Tour for Everyone,” which takes in 22 sights in central Reutlingen. Check in advance whether the app is available, too.
The two-hour “Genuss-Ver-Führung” combines Swabian cuisine with tastings of regional specialities and stories from the local food guides. It adds a culinary note to the architectural and artistic themes. Dates and booking details may change; check the current offer before making plans.
The wider Reutlingen destination
The wider Reutlingen destination also includes places to visit in Zwiefalten, Lichtenstein and Münsingen. In Zwiefalten, the Minster is at the heart of an old monastery and pilgrimage town. It is one of the most significant examples of German Baroque architecture. Concerts are held in the Minster every year; dates vary.
Lichtenstein Castle was built from 1840 to 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. The Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail runs from the castle past impressive cliff-top viewpoints directly to Nebelhöhle Cave. Public transport does not go directly to the castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. Check current connections before travelling. In Münsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre uses interactive exhibits and audio and video features to share information about the nature, landscape and people of the biosphere area. The Old Castle houses the Münsingen Town Museum, which presents the history and culture of the Münsingen Alb. The Biosphere Centre’s educational group activities include felt-making, planting, harvesting and cooking together; check the latest programme details.
