Münsingen can be discovered through a range of experiences: guided tours of the former military training area, premium hiking trails, and exhibitions about nature, the landscape and regional history. This lets you combine outdoor activities with cultural discoveries. When planning your trip, it helps to first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Tours of the former military training area

The Münsingen TrÜP guides lead selected tours across the grounds of the former Münsingen military training area. Depending on the tour, you can explore on foot, by bicycle or by bus. For visitors interested in the site and its history, this is one way to get to know the area on a guided tour. Check the tour operator’s availability before booking.

Hiking trails and multi-day tours

Four of the 21 premium hiking trails in the “hochgehberge – Award-Winning Hiking in the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve” hiking region are in Münsingen. This puts the local offering in the context of the wider hiking region. If hiking is a focus of your trip, check the current route overview and then decide how you would like to spend the rest of your holiday.

The first two WANDERMAHL multi-day tours offered by the Biosphere hosts also start in Münsingen. They are another option for a trip centred on multi-day hiking. Check the tours’ current availability before planning.

Nature and history in Münsingen

The Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre presents the diversity of nature, landscapes and people through interactive displays as well as audio and video features. It offers a way to explore the biosphere reserve as a subject alongside outdoor activities. The town museum in the palace is housed in the Old Palace in Münsingen and showcases the history and culture of the Münsinger Alb. The two attractions have different focuses: the centre explores nature, landscapes and people, while the museum focuses on the region’s history and culture.

More options in the wider Reutlingen destination

The wider Reutlingen destination also offers cultural and hiking destinations in their own right. In Zwiefalten, the Minster of Our Lady is the centrepiece of the old monastery and pilgrimage town. It is one of the most significant examples of German Late Baroque architecture. Concerts are held in the minster every year; dates vary. In the same wider destination, Lichtenstein Castle was built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. The Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail leads from the castle along the scenic cliffs directly to Nebelhöhle Cave.

Important information for travelling to Lichtenstein Castle: public transport does not go directly there. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; you can hike to the castle from there. Check current connections before your visit. In the wider Reutlingen destination, trained TrÜP guides also lead visitors on individual tours or in groups on scheduled dates throughout the year across the former military training area. Check dates and booking conditions in advance.

Choose Münsingen as your destination

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can choose a location based on the experiences you have planned: a guided tour, hiking trails, or exhibitions about nature and regional history. Consider which of these themes matters most to you, and compare Münsingen in light of your planned itinerary. If you also want to include places in the wider Reutlingen destination, treat their cultural and hiking attractions as separate travel options; the attractions mentioned are not necessarily in Münsingen.
