The Urbach landslide is more than a distinctive landmark: a trail winds through orchards around it, and information panels cover the area’s history, geology, flora and fauna. There is also a woodland discovery trail, an orchard education trail and activities for those interested in culture. This means you can choose between enjoying nature, family-friendly discoveries and local history during your stay.
Landslide and nature trails
The landslide occurred in 2001 and has become a landmark of Urbach. The landslide circular trail is around three kilometres long and leads through orchards around the landslide area. Seven information panels cover its history, geology, flora and fauna. The trail combines an outdoor walk with insights into the landscape and how it was formed. If you are particularly interested in these topics, you can make the panels the focus of your walk.
The woodland discovery trail is 2.2 kilometres long. Interactive stations and trail features offer an active, holistic way to experience nature. The trail is described as an outing for families, schools and kindergartens. The Hauwiese forest playground and barbecue area lies between the landslide circular trail and the woodland discovery trail. It offers a place to relax, play and take a break.
The Linsenberg orchard education trail offers a different focus. It runs along Linsenberg and provides information about fruit growing, trees and shrubs, ecology and the landscape. From here, you can enjoy views to the south across the Remstal and towards the opposite hills of the Schurwald. Those interested in fruit growing and the landscape will find a different perspective here than on the panels around the landslide.
For a walk through the town, there is a route just under four kilometres long that passes through almost all of Urbach. It complements the trails, which focus more specifically on the landslide, woodland or fruit growing. A small part of Urbach’s municipal area lies within the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park, so the nature park does not cover the entire municipality.
Mountain biking
The flow trail is part of a roughly 14-kilometre loop in Urbach and includes two sections. It is free to use. A suitable mountain bike, a helmet and sufficient riding skills are required. To prevent damage, the trail should not be ridden in wet weather. These conditions are important when planning your day: the flow trail is a good fit for a stay that includes mountain biking, but it requires suitable equipment and riding skills.
Local history and market dates
The second floor of the Urbach media library houses a permanent exhibition on the town’s history. It spans the period from the Ice Age through the Middle Ages to the present day. The Museum am Widumhof offers another perspective on local history: it is housed in one of Urbach’s oldest half-timbered houses. The museum rooms are on the upper floors; the ground floor has an exhibition room with changing themes, as well as the renovated museum cellar in the vaulted basement.
When visiting the centre of Urbach, you can plan around the weekly market. It takes place once a week, usually on Fridays from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, in the market square. The traditional Christmas market is held on the second Sunday of Advent from 11:00 am to 6:30 pm in the centre of Urbach, in the market square and around the roundabout.
