Moated Castle, Fortress and Churches

The octagonal moated castle of the Barons of Sturmfeder was built in 1783 in the Neoclassical style. It stands on the site of a moated castle dating from the late 13th century. These two phases of construction give the site a distinctive historical contrast: the earlier structure was followed by a castle with a clearly defined octagonal shape and Neoclassical design.

Reichenberg Castle rises high above Oppenweiler and is visible from far away. Margrave Hermann of Baden had it built as a defensive stronghold in 1230/31. The moated castle and the fortress thus represent different eras and building purposes. The churches, too, preserve distinctive works of art: the Evangelical Parish Church of St. James has a high altar from the 15th century. The Catholic Church of St. Stephen houses Stations of the Cross featuring images by Sieger Köder transferred onto glass.

Visitors who want to combine different historical and artistic impressions during their stay will find several points of interest in these buildings. Their history pairs well with time spent outdoors: a day focused on architectural heritage offers a different experience from a tour across the heights around the town.

Hiking Trails and Different Tours

Several well-marked hiking trails lead through the countryside in and around Oppenweiler; some follow elevated routes with expansive views. Hiking car parks are located on Untere Ortsstraße, in Buch-Eich, on Eschelhofstraße and by the Rossstall barbecue area. Check current trail conditions when planning your route.

The Panorama Trail is one route with precise figures: it starts at the town hall, is 14 kilometres long and has a total elevation gain of 411 metres. Its distance and elevation give you clear figures to help fit the hike into your day. The Way of St. James offers a different point of reference. In Oppenweiler, it runs from Eschelhofstraße via Reutenhof and the railway station to St. James’ Church; this section forms part of the pilgrimage route from Rothenburg to Rottenburg. Together, a hike with a specified distance and elevation and a local section of a long-distance pilgrimage route offer different ways to explore the area on foot.

Seven different routes are also listed for Oppenweiler, with a total length of 48 kilometres. This figure supplements the specific details for the Panorama Trail without limiting all the routes to a single type of hike. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether architectural heritage, the local pilgrimage route or a hike with elevation gain will shape your stay. Your answer can help structure your days, without assuming that your accommodation has any particular amenities.

Further Options in the Rems-Murr District

At the level of the wider Rems-Murr district, the 50-kilometre Rems-Murr hiking trail offers another tour option. You can hike it in three stages from Endersbach via Winnenden to Murrhardt. The route navigation can be downloaded to a smartphone; public transport serves the entire hiking trail well, so you do not need a car to get there. This is a separate regional hiking suggestion alongside the trails in and around Oppenweiler.

The seasonal Limesbus Nord, route 372, also operates in the Rems-Murr district from May until the penultimate Sunday in October, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. It runs from Murrhardt via Grab and Großerlach to Mainhardt and back. The bus makes it possible to hike to sites along the UNESCO World Heritage Limes or join tours led by Limes Cicerones. Check the current operating days before travelling.

Culture and food and drink in the wider district offer a different focus from Oppenweiler’s buildings. In Backnang, historical guided tours follow in the footsteps of the margraves and lead to the Collegiate Church of St. Pancras, which contains the burial place of the Margraves of Baden. In Fellbach, the winegrowers at the Neue Kelter offer wine tastings, cellar tours and a snack. The annual Weintreff at the Alte Kelter is a tasting event where numerous winemakers and other food and drink producers from the Remstal-Stuttgart region present their products. Check current dates and availability for these offers in advance.
