Discover Ebni at Lake Ebnisee
Accommodation in Ebni
Ebni combines Lake Ebnisee with a variety of experiences involving water, nature and history. The lake lies in a valley between Ebni and Kaisersbach and covers around 6.7 hectares. It reaches a depth of up to approximately 5 metres and is fed mainly by the Sommerbach, which flows in on the northern shore. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Ebni will find a destination whose character is not limited to a single activity.
At Lake Ebnisee between the lakeside path and aquatic activities
For a relaxing day by the lake, the path around Lake Ebnisee is ideal. It is approximately 1.7 kilometres long and almost level. On the eastern side, it is paved; apart from a slight incline, it can be easily navigated with a pushchair or wheelchair. This specific description of the route is helpful for families and groups travelling together when walks catering to different needs are to fit into the day's plans.
Lake Ebnisee is used as a swimming lake. Rowing and pedal boating, walks along the lakeshore and relaxation on sunbathing lawns are also possible. Barbecues can be held at designated barbecue areas. This makes it possible to combine active and quieter periods by the water without committing to a specific way of spending the day. The activities offered as part of “Ebnisee für Alle” are free of charge. The inclusive event around Lake Ebnisee has taken place over three days between May and August since 2008.
Nature trail and traces of history
The “Gallengrotte” natural monument is located in the area around Lake Ebnisee. It can be reached from the northern lakeshore via a romantically rugged path. This destination adds a section in which the route itself becomes part of the experience to the lake's open character.
The hike “From Lake Ebnisee to the Limes World Heritage Site” also focuses on something different. It follows traces of the Roman frontier, partly along the old boundary rampart and past the remains of watchtowers and a former small fort. Several information boards along the route provide insights into the lives of the Romans on the border with Germania. Those interested in cultural history can thus combine their stay at Lake Ebnisee with visible traces of the past.
A lake with a long history of development
Lake Ebnisee was first dammed in the winter of 1745/1746; from 1884 onwards, it was dammed permanently. Initially, modest tourism began to develop around the lake, which over the following decades grew into a local recreation destination as it is today. The name of the district of Ebni may also refer to an older craft tradition: it is probably connected with medieval glassmaking and may derive from the flattening of glass that was initially blown as a hollow body.
If swimming, boats, lakeside paths and sunbathing lawns are to be the focus, Lake Ebnisee is the defining reference point for planning. Those who would also like to include natural monuments or the history of the Limes should consider these destinations as separate elements of their stay. A holiday apartment in Ebni can therefore serve as a base for a trip that combines relaxation by the water, discovering things together and historical topics, without every day having to follow the same pattern.
