Half-timbered houses and local history

The townscape is characterised by imposing half-timbered gabled houses, most of which were built after the fire of 1753. Their gables make this style of construction particularly prominent in the townscape. As you walk through Sulzbach an der Murr, you encounter architecture whose history is closely linked to the rebuilding that followed the fire.

Among the notable historic buildings is the former Lautereck moated castle. The half-timbered building dates from the second half of the 17th century and has two corner towers. The Protestant Ulrich Church is also part of the town’s history: it dates from 1754 to 1756 and houses a Renaissance-era pulpit. These two buildings thus highlight different historical connections.

A smaller, unusual architectural detail can be found at the former washhouse and bakehouse in Schmale Gasse. Its half-timbered upper storey is partly supported by stone posts; the building is one of the few surviving examples of its kind. Hiking trails and woodland discoveries

The premium hiking trail “Sagenhafter Femelwald” (Legendary Femel Forest) starts at the Seitenbachtal hiking car park, near the leisure complex of the same name. Along the way, it passes legendary natural monuments and historic small monuments, as well as several viewpoints. At the Teufelstein (Devil’s Stone), one of the trail’s stops, you can read the legend and take a break. The route thus combines nature and history on a single hike.

For a different kind of exploration, a roughly four-kilometre bird and forest trail leads through the woods from the Seitenbachtal forest car park. The route combines walking with themes related to birds and the forest.

The 38-kilometre “Jubiläumsweg” (Anniversary Trail) circular hiking route also runs around Sulzbach an der Murr. It was waymarked in 2020 to mark the 125th anniversary of the Sulzbach an der Murr branch of the Swabian Alb Association and is divided into three sections. This division lets you focus on individual sections rather than only considering the overall distance. The Feenspuren network of hiking and walking routes also includes Sulzbach an der Murr.

Tree diversity and active excursions

An arboretum on Utschberg is home mainly to non-native tree species. It lies along the “Sagenhafter Femelwald” trail. To reach the arboretum, take the turn-off from state road 1066 into the “Hummelbühl” residential area, then follow Theodor-Heuss-Straße. Tree species and woodland themes thus complement the historic small monuments and viewpoints as further interests to explore during your stay.

A municipal brochure presents mountain bike routes around Oppenweiler, Aspach, Sulzbach an der Murr and Spiegelberg. The route network described in it covers a total of 141 kilometres and more than 3,500 metres of elevation gain. These figures apply to the entire network, not just Sulzbach an der Murr.
