Wine and Fountain Trails in Bötzingen

A circular hiking trail about 10 kilometres long also serves as a wine trail. It runs through the Bötzingen district and was created through a joint initiative by the Bötzingen winegrowers’ association and the municipality. If you are interested in winegrowing and the village, the trail combines exercise with a themed route.

The family-friendly Bötzingen Fountain Trail is shorter, at about 7 kilometres. The circular route starts in the centre of the village at the railway station and passes twelve running fountains as well as other sights. Seventeen information boards explore the importance of water for people and animals, fruit and winegrowing, businesses and the fire brigade. This gives the Fountain Trail a different focus from the wine trail: here, water as part of local life takes centre stage.

Nature Trails and Longer Routes

For a shorter walk, try the 1.7-kilometre Schambach Valley Nature Trail. This pram-friendly route combines activities with information about experiencing nature. Information boards and stations introduce visitors to bird and butterfly species of the Kaiserstuhl, wild bees and other animals. An observation beehive shows how a colony of bees lives and works; lizards and slowworms find shelter in a dry-stone wall.

The Bötzingen Forest Experience Trail also fits into the nature theme. From the railway station, you can reach it by following signposted routes through Pilsenstraße and Waldstraße, past the “Tennishalle” playground and along the Murrgraben to the Erlenschachen playground. If you are looking for a longer route, consider the 17.9-kilometre Steinkauz Trail, which runs through Wasenweiler, Bötzingen, Eichstetten, Bahlingen and Riegel. There is a network of cycling routes around Bötzingen, and you can cycle around the Kaiserstuhl on a roughly 64-kilometre circuit away from road traffic.

Churches, Art and Local History

The Protestant church in Bötzingen has been used for Protestant services since 1583 and dates back to a smaller Gothic building from the Reformation century. Today, it is increasingly used for sacred concerts, including “Bach in the Regio” and choir concerts, which also attract visitors from the surrounding area.

The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius is considered to be Bötzingen’s oldest building, probably. Its imposing tower was built as a defensive tower; the choir windows and rib vault point to the Late Gothic period. The Madonna in the Baroque high altar is attributed to Hans Wyditz. Near Oberschaffhausen stands the Late Gothic St. Alban’s Chapel, built around 1480 as a former church of the Teutonic Order. Its wall paintings date from the 15th century; locally, it is known as the Peschdkirchle.

The manor house by the former mill is also part of the village’s history. It was built in 1578 and 1771 and served as the residence of Privy Councillor Enderlin. The Old and Youngtimer Museum covers a different period, displaying historic cars and motorcycles from the 1920s to the 1980s.
