Belleville-Sur-Saône: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The Notre-Dame Abbey Church was built towards the end of the 12th century from an abbey founded by Humbert III, Lord of Beaujeu. Construction began in 1168, and the church was consecrated in 1179. The predominantly Romanesque building is characterised by the choir, raised in the Gothic style in the 15th century, and a rose window dated 1175. In 1862, the Notre-Dame Abbey Church was listed as a Monument historique; in 2023, it received the “Site clunisien” label. Due to interior renovation work, it is closed throughout 2026 and open only on Sundays for religious services.

Culture and History

Opened in 1733, the Hôtel-Dieu preserves three hospital wards, two chapels, a pharmacy laboratory, a council chamber and archives. A one-hour guided tour covers daily life in the hospital; guided tours of the pharmacy equipment and its collections, as well as of the council chamber, are also available. The Hôtel-Dieu also includes the Jardin de Simples, with ten beds. Plants grow there that were formerly cultivated by the Sisters of Sainte-Marthe and arranged according to their traditional uses.

The Maison de la Saône is a former pumping station belonging to the PLM company. It has been restored, and a river landing stage was also built. In the building, the association L’Atelier selon toi offers visual arts courses and creative writing workshops. The former Roux factory is part of the area’s industrial history, with a courtyard, offices, a workshop, two water boilers, a production steam engine and a chimney; the buildings have been restored and upgraded since 2016.

Markets and Festivals

Belleville-en-Beaujolais celebrates the Fête des Conscrits every year on the last weekend of February. The tradition has continued there since the end of the 19th century. The Tuesday market in Belleville has 40 food vendors and 60 vendors selling manufactured goods. The Saturday market features around a dozen vendors selling food and other goods.

Paths and Water

The Voie Verte du Beaujolais cycle path runs for more than 15 km along the Ardières Valley between Belleville and Beaujeu. The Voie Verte is accessible on foot, by bicycle and on roller skates, as well as to people with reduced mobility; motorised vehicles are prohibited.

Wine and Cuisine

The Domaine du Château de Pizay has almost a thousand years of history and was first mentioned in documents from Cluny Abbey in 1030. It has 80 hectares of vineyards spread across several appellations. Visitors can discover the Château’s wines in a wine shop. The gardens of the Château de Pizay form a life-size chessboard with 32 plant elements.

The wine experience includes an immersive tour through a vineyard, during which visitors learn about the work of winegrowers and the cultivation of vines over the course of the year. The wine and chocolate experience includes a tasting of three wines and three chocolates.

The “Oils and Treats” workshop begins in Belleville-en-Beaujolais with a culinary workshop based on one or more products such as oils, vinegars or fruit powders. Participants can taste the dishes prepared during the culinary workshop.
