Activities

The Plan d’eau de Poule-les-Écharmeaux offers meadows open to the public. The body of water is suitable for walks and fishing and has picnic tables; a signposted circular trail allows visitors to explore the wetland.

The signposted “36” circular trail starts at the Col des Écharmeaux, is 10.3 km long and leads over the summit of the Roche d’Ajoux. A virtual orientation board at the Roche d’Ajoux displays a 340-degree panorama and provides commentary on twelve notable viewpoints. At the Col des Écharmeaux, hikers on the GR7 and the Way of St. James have access to a rest shelter.

The guided tour “Balades des Roches Mystérieuses” leads through the beech forest of the Roche d’Ajoux to notable boulders and rock formations belonging to the Beaujolais Geopark. BV Aventure aux Echarmeaux offers a 2-hour-and-30-minute circular tour as well as a shorter 1-hour-and-30-minute circular tour.

Culture and history

The Église de Lafont in Poule-les-Écharmeaux was built in 1860 and is dedicated to Saint Isidore, the patron saint of farmers. The church is currently closed.

The guided tour with commentary “Il était un temps au Col des Écharmeaux” presents the architecture, the works of a local artist and the history of the Col des Écharmeaux. At the Col des Écharmeaux, at an altitude of 712 m, there is a statue of Napoleon; the pass is a crossroads between Beaujolais, Lyonnais and Charolais. The Statue de Napoléon was created by the local sculptor Jean Molette.
