Culture and history
The church of Saint-Clément preserves several remarkable details. The coats of arms of the Flandin cardinals are carved above its entrance door. Inside, there is an elaborately decorated pulpit dating from 1874, featuring depictions of the four Evangelists. The very old baptismal font supports the altarpiece and is decorated with a rare interlacing motif known as the Solomon's knot.
In the vicinity of Saint-Clément are “Ruins du château de Mézanc”, a ruin, and “Ancienne Chatreuse de Bonnefoy”, also a ruin. “Abbaye de Bellecombe” is a ruin in the wider region surrounding Saint-Clément. The “Église Saint-Philibert des Estables” is also located nearby.
Landscape
The Sentier d’Éole is a 5.5-kilometre-long trail that runs along the foot of the wind turbines. From the Saint-Clément viewpoint, the view stretches from the Alps to the Gerbier de Jonc.
The Sentier géologique – N°26 leads to a unique superposition of 12 basalt flows.
Mont Signou, a mountain, is located in the immediate vicinity of Saint-Clément. Roche de Borée, a mountain, Serre du Truc, a summit, and Mont Mézenc Nord, a mountain, are also located in the surrounding area.
The “Les coulées basaltiques” area in Saint-Clément comprises more than 11 lava flows from the Mézenc massif. They have accumulated on top of one another over millions of years; erosion of the valleys has shaped them into the high plateau.
Nature
White stonecrop grows on basalt slabs along the geological trail of Saint-Clément. It serves as a host plant for the rare Apollo butterfly; with a little luck, you can observe it in flight.
