Fors: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Four hiking routes are signposted from the Champ de Foire in Fors; the four routes marked there by Fors Passion are considered accessible to everyone. The route “Entre marais et forêt: la commune de Fors” is a cultural and historical route that can be walked, as well as an easy 2.5-kilometre hike.

Hiking and cycling

There is also a secure bicycle shelter at the railway station car park in Fors. The shelter provides two separate, free parking spaces with independent access for users.

Culture and history

Excavations at the Champ-Royal archaeological site uncovered the remains of an ancient vicus covering three hectares, which included villas, thermal baths, porticoes and a forum. The Church of Notre-Dame in Fors dates from the 12th century and was partially destroyed during the Wars of Religion. After falling into poor condition in the 19th century, it was restored; in 1930, a fresco depicting children and a bishop was discovered beneath the whitewash.

Today, only ruins remain of the Château de Fors. The former distillery in Fors was established in the 1890s and produced a liqueur called La Cistercienne.

Near Fors are the Ancienne Abbaye de Saint-Liguaire, a historic site, and Niort Dongeon, a monument. In the wider region around Fors, there are also the Château de Mursay, a historic site, and the Abbaye royale de Celles-sur-Belle, a monastery.
