Church of Saint-Séverin and Hosanna Cross
The Church of Saint-Séverin was built in the 11th and 12th centuries on the site of a pre-Romanesque church. Its three-bay nave has masonry groin vaults. A bay is a section of the nave; a groin vault is formed where the vault ridges intersect. The architecture can therefore be described through specific features: the layout of the nave and the construction of its vaults. The bell tower also has a distinctive shape. The stone tower is dome-shaped; because of its scale-carved stones, its shape is known as a “pine cone”.
The 15th-century Hosanna Cross stands in the church square, on the site of the former parish cemetery. Its name refers to the historical function of this type of cross: Hosanna crosses served as gathering points for religious ceremonies, especially Palm Sunday processions. During these processions, the faithful sang “Hosanna” in honour of Christ. The cross in Nieul-Le-Virouil was added to the register of historic monuments on 23 February 1925. The church and the cross thus offer different points of connection with the past: the architectural history of an older church site, and a monument with a traditional religious function.
Walking trail and the Tarnac
The “Les trois petits bois” walking trail is 8.5 kilometres long and has only slight changes in elevation. The route information takes you across the Tarnac; it also describes crossing a river via a small footbridge. The length and elevation changes give you a clear framework for planning. A trout fishing stretch also runs along the Tarnac, from the Pont de La Laigne to the Moulin de Goribon within the municipality. A September 2024 municipal gazette listed a small vegetable market in the church square. It gave the market dates as the first and third Sunday of each month, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.; jams and honey were offered. If you plan to visit the market, check the current dates in advance.
