La Clisse is located in the Type I ZNIEFF “L’Arnoult”. Its boundaries encompass the entire Arnoult valley from its source to its mouth, as well as several adjacent satellite marshes.

Planning your own trip may include renting a holiday apartment in La Clisse.

Nature

The Arnoult, a tributary of the Charente, borders La Clisse for a length of 3 kilometres between Luchat and Corme-Royal. At the exit of La Clisse towards Corme-Royal, a clearly visible rock face can be seen at the Marais de l’Arnoult.

The Type I ZNIEFF “L’Arnoult” encompasses habitats for the European otter, European mink, European pond turtle, notable dragonfly species and bats. These habitats include wet eutrophic meadows and bocage landscapes.

The Arnoult valley serves at least 15 bat species, including 13 species classified as determining species, as a feeding area or, where applicable, a breeding area.

Culture

Construction of the Sainte-Madeleine de La Clisse church began in the 12th century; the year 1130 is cited as the start of the work. Above the altar is a recently restored crucifixion painting by the Saintongeais painter Pierre Vincent, dating from 1784.

The façade of the Sainte-Madeleine de La Clisse church is decorated with headless sculptures, including a lion motif. Beside La Clisse town hall, a Gabirotte stands in the park of the same name; it is a traditional shelter for vegetable growers made of dry stone masonry.

History

Vegetable growing has been documented in La Clisse since the Middle Ages and developed in the 19th century after the Arnoult was canalised in 1812.

Visiting

The Sainte-Madeleine de La Clisse church is normally open daily throughout the year and admission is free. If it is closed, visitors can contact the town hall to have it opened.
