Culture and history
At the Hôtel de Cheusses / Arsenal of the Musée national de la Marine, the collections present the naval arsenal commissioned by Louis XIV and explore all aspects of military shipbuilding. The Formes de Radoub in Rochefort are historic facilities for the maintenance and repair of ships; facilities of this kind were first established in France between 1668 and 1671 in Rochefort.
The Centre d'Interprétation de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine in Rochefort offers a permanent exhibition that provides an understanding of the city and its development. At the Ancienne École de Médecine Navale, visitors can see drawings that researchers of the time brought back from expeditions around the world while travelling aboard ships.
The Jardin des Retours is a botanical site created in 1991 near the Corderie Royale. It commemorates the great maritime and botanical expeditions as well as the return of ships to the harbour. The Conservatoire du Bégonia houses Europe’s first begonia collection, with more than 1,000 hybrid species.
The Maison de Pierre Loti features a Turkish mosque, a Renaissance-style salon and a Japanese pagoda within its historic interior. A reservation is required to visit it; the tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The Station de Lagunage de Rochefort offers a guided tour that clearly explains the journey of wastewater from the tap to the Charente River, as well as the site’s diverse wildlife.
At the Station de Lagunage de Rochefort, shallow, planted pools created by the LPO, 10 to 20 centimetres deep, provide wading birds with space to breed.
